Gmail vs. Traditional E-Mail
3
General
  • Communication is an integral part of any
organization. Central to this role is email, and
to a certain extent, various types of digital
messaging. Googles mail server and user
application, Gmail, and Office 365s online
    equivalent to Microsofts on-premise Exchange
Server and Outlook software, are arguably the two
leaders in email networking and personal
    information management.

4
  • The two services diverge in many ways. Central to
this claim is that while Google remains
unwavering in its quest to remain utterly
cloud-based, Office 365 still relies heavily upon
its on-premise software, such as Exchange Server
and Active Directory. Google does this as well in
a few cases, but it is really just due to
    migration/adoption purposes. Nonetheless, this
isnt necessarily a bad thing for Office 365, as
hybrid cloud solutions can be said to be the best
strategy going these days, as enterprises look to
slowly transition their data and infrastructure
to both on-demand and PaaS/IaaS type spaces.

  • IT has reveals how much cheaper Web-based e-mail
such as Google's Gmail is in comparison to
    traditional e-mail installed on-premise for
businesses with up to 15,000 users. But analysts
warn that most enterprises won't be making a
wholesale switch to Web-based messaging for years
to come. Instead, they might pursue a hybrid
model where they move some e-mail services to the
    cloud and keep some on-premise.

What is Google Apps?
  • Google Apps is a suite of Google applications
that brings together essential services to help
your business. This is a hosted service that lets
businesses, schools, and institutions use a
variety of Google products -- including Email,
Google Docs, Google Calendar, and Google Talk --
    on a unique domain

11
For instance, if you own the domain example.com
and you sign up for Google Apps services,
everyone at your organization will get
12
  • 1. A custom email address (user_at_example.com)
  • 2. Tools for word processing
  • 3. Spreadsheets and presentations
  • 4. A shared calendaring system
  • 5. Tools for creating web pages and sites for
    your business
  • 6. Access to a flexible intranet system

13
How is a Google Account different from a Google
Apps account?
  • Although Google Apps and Google Accounts allow
you to access several of the same Google
products, they're different types of accounts. A
Google Account is a unified sign-in system that
provides access to a variety of free Google
consumer products -- such as Gmail, Google
Groups, Google Shopping List, Picasa, Web
History, iGoogle, and Google Checkout --
administered by Google. Google Apps provides
access to products powered by Google but
    administered by your organization.

Traditional emails
  • Traditional email is an email system that
provides an always-on capability, in which new
email is actively transferred (pushed) as it
arrives by the mail delivery agent to the mail
user agent, also called the email client. Email
clients include smartphones and, less strictly,
    IMAP personal computer mail applications.
