  • As I stated in my recent State of Education
    address, we must eliminate current inequities and
    give all students a chance at a more hopeful
    future than the present. Closing the achievement
    gap is central to that goal. To do so, high
    schools need to offer programs that engage and
    motivate students and the multiple pathways
    approach is a promising strategy that deserves
    our immediate attention.

Multiple Pathways Planning Approach
  • Prepares all students for success after high
    school regardless of their preparation prior to
    entering high school.
  • Is appropriate for any student regardless of
    postsecondary goals. Students graduate prepared
    to pursue a full range of options two-year and
    four-year colleges, technical colleges,
    apprenticeships, formal employer training
    programs, or education through the military.
  • Challenges students by providing a rigorous
    college-preparatory curriculum, which
    specifically meets the eligibility requirements
    for application to Californias public colleges
    and universities.
  • Engages students by making school relevant. By
    integrating academic and technical curricula,
    offering work-based learning opportunities, and
    setting learning in the context of real-world
    application, students are able to see academic
    principles in action.
  • Allows students to select a context for
    learning that interests them by offering a choice
    of pathways. One school may offer programs in
    three industry sectors, or, if it can only offer
    one sector, it may coordinate with other local
    schools to provide access to other pathways.
  • Supports students who need help to succeed in
    their programs by providing academic assistance
    to master a challenging curriculum.
  • Ensures students have a plan for the future by
    informing them of what they need to do in high
    school to achieve their postsecondary goals and
    helping them develop an action plan to get there.
  • Is flexible enough to allow schools to adapt it
    to their local context, selecting theme(s) and
    developing or adopting curriculum relevant to
    their communities.

Pathways in Action
  • Each pathway offers an integrated approach
    to learning. The core academic courses
    systematically take advantage of the pathways
    theme to introduce authentic applications of
    essential academic knowledge.
  • GEOMETRY Students learn the concepts and skills
    needed to build roofs and frame walls that
    withstand gale-force winds.
  • PRE-CALCULUS Students study the role of
    mathematics in designing and building a
    seismically sound Bay Bridge.
  • HISTORY Students learn how the built environment
    reflects and shapes culture, politics, and the
    economy.
  • ENGLISH Students master technical reading and
    writing, and gain appreciation for relevant
    literature, such as Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy
    Kidders House, a compelling nonfiction account
    of building the American dream.
  • TECHNICAL COURSES Students learn
    occupation-specific skillscarpentry,
    electricity, and masonryand study fundamental
    principles of engineering and design, project and
    site planning, construction management, and
    emerging technologies. They gain a foundation of
    industry knowledge and skills applicable to a
    wide range of career opportunities in the world
    of building and environmental design.
  • WORK-BASED LEARNING Ninth- and tenth-graders are
    connected to mentors in fields such as
    architecture, construction, or interior design.
    High school juniors and seniors engage in more
    intensive internships, working
  • alongside professionals who assess their work
    against industry standards. They also participate
    in school-based enterprises such as home
    building, design services, or community
    environmental projects.
  • SUPPLEMENTAL SERVICES Additional support,
    especially instruction in reading and
    mathematics, helps students master high levels of
    academic and technical knowledge. Like the core
    academic classes, supplemental courses take
    advantage of the pathways theme to give meaning
    to

  • New individual school advisories need to be
    developed to include community, business,
    educational and professional members.
  • Ideally, schools should develop individual
    advisories for each of their pathways as well as
    a CTE leadership team for the entire school.

Oak Crest Middle School
  • Implement a computer club that will train
    students to provide school tech services for
    hardware and software support. Club advisor will
    be Dennis Stockton.
  • Use 3 minimum days to infuse CTE lessons into all
    classes. September theme would be job seeking and
    job keeping skills based on the 6 Character
    Counts Pillars. March theme would be career
    pathways into the 15 industry standards. May
    theme would be a school wide career day with
    guest speakers in all classes.
  • Continue to build Speaker Bureau and advertise to
    all teachers.
  • Improve communication with parents, community,
    and other schools about our CTE programs.
  • Continue to survey/create e-portfolios for
    seventh and eighth graders and relay that
    information to high school counselors.

Earl Warren Middle School
  • Increase awareness and use of Bridges program to
    staff and students.
  • Increase communication between middle school and
    high school levels. Specifically with Torrey
    Pines and Canyon Crest where most of our students
    attend after 8th grade.
  • Continue to develop advisory committee (including
    students, teachers, counselors, and community
    members) and hold meetings each semester to check
    in about understanding, efficiency and any
    suggestions about CTE within our school and
    district wide.
  • Put more focus on our middle school students
    decisions that they will make in regards to high
    school selections and class options and not so
    much on what their future career choice may be.

Diegueno Middle School
  • 1) Form a Diegueño site CTE Advisory Board.
  • 2) Develop/expand a Parent Outreach program and
    network to develop speakers, sponsors, business
    contacts, and a permanent data base of the
    parental/professional network and include this in
    the PTSA network.
  • 3) Integrate Character Counts with CTE
    activities.
  • 4) Use a minimum day as a forum for a Career Day
    at Diegueño Middle School.
  • 5) Articulate CTE strategies and programs with
    the high schools.
  • 6) Increase communication and provide
    information to parents, community members, and
    other schools. Use current communication methods
    such as the bulletin and newsletter.
  • 7) Continue the school-wide E-Choices
    opportunity for all students.

Carmel Valley Middle School
  • 1. Increase the awareness and use of our Bridges
    E-Choices software among students, parents and
    teachers on our campus.
  • 2. Further develop parent outreach and build our
    network of career speakers. Maintain speakers
    bureau for annual Career Day and guest speakers
    for classroom guest presentations throughout the
    year.
  • 3. Increase awareness of CTE programs and Career
    Exploration efforts for middle school students,
    with improved visibility at Orientations, PTSA
    meetings, and via our website.
  • 4. Form advisory committee for site, for purpose
    of enacting site action plan and serving as
    liaisons for articulation and collaboration with
    efforts directed at high schools, elementary
    schools and other middle schools.

La Costa Canyon High School
  • Applied Tech Chair will provide information
    regarding CTE courses offered at LCCHS and
    possible ways of integrating CTE curricula with
    core courses and vice-versa at the next Dept.
    Chair meeting, April 2, 2004.
  • Applied Tech Chair and Assistant Principal will
    ask Principal for time at the August 2008 teacher
    in-service to give information to entire staff
    regarding CTE courses and possible ways of
    integrating CTE curricula with core courses and
    vice-versa.
  • Counselors, Assistant Principals, and Applied
    Tech Chair will meet with Counselors and Applied
    Tech Chairs from Diegueno MS and Oak Crest MS at
    LCCHS.
  • Upon receipt of the District-wide survey
    regarding student interest in CTE courses, we
    will
  • Attach the survey to the LCC Parent Portal,
    which will pop up upon first entry into the
    portal for the 2008-09 school year by parents.
    Parents much take the survey before getting into
    the regular portal.

La Costa Canyon High School continued
  • We will investigate the possibility of adding
    parents type of work or industry into the
    on-line registration packet for the 2008-09
    school year.
  • Applied Tech Chair and Assistant Principal will
    create an overall LCCHS CTE Advisory Board.
  • We will contact both the Encinitas and Carlsbad
    Chamber of Commerce for their assistance.
  • We will investigate the possibility of hosting a
    CTE Night at LCCHS. Students and CTE teachers
    from La Costa Canyon High School, Diegueno Middle
    School, and Oak Crest Middle School will present
    student projects to high school and middle school
    students and parents.

  • 1. Offer more CTE courses (create "pathways"-
