  • 14 years of teaching experience
  • Married and has three children, Logan is 7,
    Allyson is 4 and Ashlyn is 2.
  • Grew up in Pennsylvania, graduated from ASU

  • 12 years of teaching experience
  • Married and has 3 children- Madeline is 7, Molly
    is 4 years old and Grace is 18 months old.
  • Arizona native, attended NAU

Things to Know
  • Mrs. Kirby teaches on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Mrs. Plenn teaches on Thursday and Friday.
  • We alternate Wednesdays.
  • Please include us both on every email.

The New Common Core Standards
  • We need standards to ensure that all students,
    no matter where they live, are prepared for
    success in postsecondary education and the
    workforce. Common standards will help ensure that
    students are receiving a high quality education
    consistently, from school to school and state to
    state. Common standards will provide a greater
    opportunity to share experiences and best
    practices within and across states that will
    improve our ability to best serve the needs of
    students.

  • Harcourt Weekly story - Each story is supported
    with books at, above and below grade level.
  • DIBELS testing and Running Records to assess
    reading levels
  • K-3 Intervention program for students needing
    extra assistance.
  • We will occasionally send home books for the
    students to read at home each night.
  • Reading groups, author studies and integration
    with informational text.

Language Arts
  • Each Harcourt story includes a phonics and
    spelling skill, vocabulary words and grammar
    focus.
  • Weekly spelling words with tests on Friday.
  • Reading/Vocabulary Test are on Friday.

Writing
  • Writing skills are taught by the Harcourt program
    and reinforced during Writers Workshop.
  • Creative writing also taught and evaluated by the
    Six Traits of Writing.
  • Examples of 2nd grade writing includes personal
    narratives/ stories, friendly letters,
    expository/ informational writing (insect report
    or biographies), and persuasive writing

Math
  • Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley Mathematics
    program provides hands-on activities and practice
    questions.
  • The Investigations program supplements with
    explorations into math topics, problem-solving
    and inventive thinking about math.
  • Meets Arizona Academic Content Standards (AACS) /
    Also known as the Common Core Standards (CC) for
    Mathematics.

  • Solids, Liquids and Gases
  • Weather
  • Insects and Mammals
  • Parts of a system
  • Studying technology- people careers, impact of
    tools, systems
  • Topics will include hands-on experiments, and
    will be integrated during centers.

  • American History Native Americans, tribes,
    immigration to the U.S.

  • Governing the People Branches of government,
    laws, symbols
  • Geography types of maps
  • Economics trade, wants, needs, natural
    resources

    or accident
  • Healthy food choices

  • Human body- digestive, respiratory circulatory
    systems

  • Programs include Pixie 2, Kidspiration, Word,
    Publisher, Dreambox, and Typing Agent
  • Internet used for research in science and social
    studies.
  • Laptops in classrooms will be used for language
    arts, math practice and research.

Grading
  • Proficient Consistently uses a skill, shows
    mastery of content.
  • Developing Use of a skill emerging, on the way
    to mastery.
  • Area of concern Experiencing significant
    difficulty in an area.

Homework
  • Main purpose is to provide practice and develop
    the responsibility of completing work at home and
    returning it on time.
  • Homework is not graded, but checked for
    completion and effort.
  • Parents are asked to check homework at home for
    accuracy, and to help correct errors immediately.
  • Please let us know if your child is having
    difficulty with any of the work assigned as
    homework.
  • Homework is due on Friday. Homework must be
    signed and returned to earn AIPS.
  • Students should read for 15 minutes each day.

Birthdays
  • To preserve instruction time and avoid
    comparisons of treats brought in, parents are
    asked not to bring in birthday treats.
  • Also, unless the entire class is invited to a
    celebration, please do not bring invitations to
    be passed out at school.

Other Info
  • If you havent already and would like to, please
    sign up for our CLASS DIRECTORY. You will
    receive a copy.
  • BOOK ORDER- This is a great way to get books for
    your child and earn points for our classroom.
  • TRANSPORTATION- If there is ever a change in your
    normal transportation routine, please send in a
    note and/or call us. If the change comes during
    the school day, please call and have the
    secretary contact our classroom.

Healthy Kids
  • Snack each day Please make it healthy.
    (yogurt, fruit, veggies, crackers)

    day. It is too hard to get the snack out of the
    lunch boxes.
  • Water bottles to sip on during the day. (water
    only)
