Title: Europe and Russia Climate and Vegetation

1
Europe and RussiaClimate and Vegetation
  • Chapter 6 Section 2

2
What we will learn
  • 1. We will find out about the wide range of
    climates Europe and Russia.
  • 2. Learn about the major climate regions of
    Europe and Russia.
  • 3. Examine the natural vegetation regions of
    Europe and Russia.

3
Please mark True or False for the following
questions
  • Warm waters and winds bring mild weather to much
    of northwestern Europe.
  • Four climate regions are common to Europe and
    Russia.
  • The northernmost areas of Europe and Russia have
    a semiarid climate.
  • In the Mediterranean climate, summers are hot and
dry, and winters are mild and rainy.
  • The natural vegetation for much of Europe is
    tundra.
  • Located in northern Europe is, the largest forest
in the world covers more than 4 million square
    miles.
  • The grasslands of Russia, called steppes, are
similar to the Great Plains of the United States.

4
A Wide Range of Climates
  • Oceans affect climate
  • Areas near an ocean or a sea have a fairly mild
    weather year round.
  • Areas that are far from the ocean often have
    extreme weather.
  • Gulf Stream
  • Becomes the North Atlantic Current and crosses
the Atlantic Ocean to Northwestern Europe. It
carries warm water and warm winds from the
tropical waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Blowing winds across the ocean provide moisture
    which then gives countries rain

5
A Wide Range of Climates
  • Mountains Affect Rainfall
  • Areas west of mountains, such as Great Britain,
France, Germany, and Norway, get heavy rainfall.
Areas east of mountains have a lighter rainfall.
  • A rain shadow is an area on the dry, sheltered
side of a mountain that receives little rainfall.

6
Major Climate Zones of Europe and Russia
  • Mediterranean- Regions that surround the
Mediterranean Sea. The climate in the summer is
hot and dry, and winters are long and cold.
  • Humid Continental Climate- Regions that are
inland (away from the ocean). Summers are hot,
and winters are long and cold.
  • Sub arctic Climate Zone, Tundra Climate- Summers
are short, and winters are long and cold. Region
that is northernmost areas of Europe and Russia.
The climate is cold all the time.

7
  • The Russian Tundra
  • The Taiga Forest
  • The Russian Grasslands

8
The Vegetation of Europe and Russia
  • Forests and Grasslands of Europe- Large
coniferous forests can be found in Northern
Europe. These are trees with cones that carry
    and protect the seeds.
  • The Russian Tundra, Forests, and Grasslands- 3
    Types of Vegetation
  • Tundra- Located in the northernmost area of
Russia. The tundra is a treeless plain where
grasses and mosses grow. Winter is 9 months long
and the ground is permafrost, or permanently
    frozen soil.
  • Forest Zones- Spreads across Siberia. The Taiga
Forest is located in Russia. It is the largest
forest in the world. It covers more than 4
    million square miles.
  • Grasslands- Covers southwestern Russia. It is
called steppes, similar to the Great Plains of
the United states. The soil is fertile, black
    and good for farming
