Magna Carta Causes Changes in England
11
Magna Carta
  • Magna Carta- document written by English nobles
and signed by King John listing rights the king
    could not ignore
  • Who demanded this agreement?- In 1215 a group of
English nobles decided to force the king to
    respect their rights.

12
Effects of Magna Carta
  • The effects were The Magna Carta led to more
changes. Faced with war and financial troubles,
the king turned to a council of nobles for advice
    and money.

13
What were the effects of the Magna Carta?
  • Three demands were Forced the king to respect
    their rights.
  • No one could be kept in jail without reason.
  • Even the king must obey the laws.
  • These rules were important because they helped
    make the society more efficient.

14
Changes After the Magna Carta
15
What did Magna Carta inspire the noble to do?
  • It inspired the noble to make more nobles to
advise the king. This group was called parliament.

16
Parliament
  • Parliament- the law-making body that governs
    England today.
  • Parliament was eventually made open to knights
and town leaders. By the late Middle Ages, kings
could do little without the Parliaments support.

17
How did the king limit Magna Carta?
  • In Europe, kings were not giving up their power
easily, but other events political change. A
major event was the Hundred year war, a long
conflict between England and France. The war
helped increase the power of parliament because
the king needed parliaments approval to raise
money to pay for the war.

18
My 3 Demands!
19
Religion
  • Religion is a big part of this society. People
need to be able to join within this society and
embrace their religion. Also, it will be less
trouble to let everyone join within one society
because so people wont judge others for which
    religion they choose.

20
Freedom
  • Freedom also plays a part in the society because
people are going in jail for no reason and they
need the rights of not going in jail unless they
have a specific reason. Today we have the law to
decide if people get threw in jail.

21
Peace
  • We need peace in our society to keep everything
under control. Without peace everything goes
crazy and chaos happens within the society and
many things and people can get hurt or destroyed.

22
Hundred Years War
23
The Hundred Years War
  • This was a long-standing conflict between England
and France during the 1300s and 1400s.

take control of Frances throne. England invaded
France and won many battles until a teenage girl
    came along and stopped them.

25
French King Dies With No Heirs
  • The king dies within the war and has no sons to
take over his place. Right now the society is
kingless and has no one to control France.

26
Two Men Claim the Throne
  • One of the countries in which political change
occurred was France. In 1328 the king of France
had died with not any sons, and two men claimed
his throne. One was French, the other was the
king of England. In the end, the French man had
    became the king.

27
English Take the Lead
  • The king had heard about this occasion and was
not happy. A few years later he invaded France.
This invasion began, a long conflict between both
    England and France.

28
Joan of Arc
  • This girl was a teenage peasant who rallied the
French troops and turned the tide of the Hundred
    Years War.

29
Results of the War
  • The Hundred Years War changed the governments of
    both England and France.

30
Changes in England
  • In England, parliaments power grew because the
king needed Parliaments approval to raise money
to pay for the costly war. As Parliament gained
more influence, the king lost his power.

31
Changes in France
  • In France, on the other hand, the kings power
grew. During the war, the had become popular with
his nobles. Fighting the English had created a
bond between them. As a result, the nobles had
supported the king well after the war.

32
Democracy in France Waits
  • Democracy in France will eventually be coming
soon, but for now we dont have it since it just
died out in England and it will eventually
    migrate from place to place.

33
The Black Death

  • This was a deadly plague that killed millions of
    Europeans between 1347 and 1351.
  • It came from originally from central and eastern
    Asia.

35
How it Spread
  • Traders unknowingly brought rats carrying the
disease to Mediterranean ports. Also, it could
float through the air you breathe.
  • What disease was it- One form called bubonic
plague could be identified by swellings on the
human bodies. Another was it could spread through
the air and kill people within less than a day.

36
How many died?
  • The plague killed millions of people in Europe
and millions more around the world. Some
historians think Europe lost about a third of its
    population- perhaps 25 million people.
  • In most places, the manor had fell apart
completely. There werent enough peasants left to
    work in the fields.

37
What had happened to it?
  • The disease had eventually died out and everyone
had fled the city, instead going to Europes
    growing cities.
