  • Example 1
  • A report by Tanaka Business School and the UK
Health Service NHS Direct', the University of
Dundee and the Office of Health Economics
    concluded that introducing SMS appointment
reminders would save the UK government between
240 and 370 million pounds sterling per annum.
Using an SMS support system improves glucose
levels in young people with diabetes by 10. This
can reduce diabetes related complications, such
as blindness by 76 and kidney disease by 50.
Tuberculosis patients could also benefit from SMS
support systems. It could lead to a reduction in
deaths and provide savings of up to 1.9 million
    pounds sterling per 1,000 patients.
  • Dr Mike Sadler, medical director of NHS Direct
(UK) commented NHS Direct has revolutionized
patient access to the National Health Service
(NHS) and mobile SMS is playing an important part
in this. We know that the use of mobile in
healthcare is acceptable to the public and the
    benefits are available now.

  • More potential examples
  • In Norway an SMS system is being developed to
warn citizens of invasion or attacks using
    chemical, biological or nuclear weapons!
  • In the Philippines the President sends
instructions to members of cabinet and other
subordinates by SMS. Also in this SMS capital
of the world it is possible to top-up pension
schemes, pay parking and speeding fines, check
work permits and passport applications, to name
but a few SMS applications introduced at national
    and local government level!
  • The Dutch government are testing a localized
SMS service, working through GPRS positioning,
to notify citizens of flooding, natural
    disasters, or potential terrorist attacks.
  • Irish Local Government Computer Services Board
has unveiled a new mobile government service to
    allow interactive communication between local
authorities and citizens. This will facilitate
    interactive communication on reminders and
updates on document requests, payment and license
    applications.
  • UK local authorities are making extensive use
already of text messaging already to communicate
with IT workers and field staff employees at much
reduced cost. Many are set now to introduce
desktop to mobile technologies via pilot
    schemes.

  • The first local and mayoral electoral vote in the
UK by text message took place on 23rd May 2002
  • December 2002- 1 billion SMS per day were
    exchanged globally
  • The Rt. Hon Tony Blair MP became the first UK
Prime Minister to use text message technology to
talk directly to the people on 25th November
2004, answering questions submitted in advance by
text message from members of the public as well
as in real-time in a mobile phone chat-room,
transmitted live from No. 10 Downing Street.

  • SMS in Education.
  • SMS in EduParents Alerted by SMS when Children
    Skip School - May 09 2003
  • CNN reports on a texting initiative by two Irish
schools, in an effort to dissuade their students
from skipping class. A database records the names
of absent students each day and automatically
sends out an SMS to their parents, notifying them
    that their child missed roll-call.
  • A similar government endorsed experience has been
implemented since last November in 400 Lyces
throughout France, thanks to technology developed
by a small wireless company, Soluphone. Parents
receive a text message with "From The Lyce.
Object Student absent on May 8, from 9 to 10 am.
    Please contact school administration". Thus
avoiding sending a letter by regular mail, which
usually ends up being intercepted by the student.

  • UK Student Unions Offer Lecture Alerts, Exam
    Updates by SMS - Aug 15 2003

implemented at 50 Universities and Colleges
    across the UK.
  • Students can now receive lecture alerts, exam
updates and promotions offered though their union
by subscribing to the Union's SMS service.
  • The idea of using TXT as a method of informing
students of Union promotions and events came to
the founder of Head Porter Ltd, Dr Simon Strojan,
while he was events organiser of his college at
    the University of Cambridge.
