Galway History
  • Galway's city walls were built around by the
Normans in the 13th century to defend their
settlement on the River Corrib from the Irish
O'Flagherty family from whom they had seized the
land. The city was loyal to the English crown and
was an important trading port trading with Spain
and Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries, but
was sacked by Cromwell's forces after a nine
month siege in 1652. The city also stood on the
side of King James against William of Orange in
1691 and was further destroyed. Its current
revival has only been in recent decades.

Points of Interest Cathedral
  • Opened in 1965, the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed
into Heaven and Saint Nicholas is situated on the
site of the former county jail which closed in
1939 and was notorious for its cruel treatment of
    prisoners.
  • The largest and possibly the most impressive
building in the city. The copper domed roof is
visible for miles around and the massive site on
which it stands is one of the largest in the city
centre. Nearly all of the raw materials used in
the building were supplied from the local area
and is a fine example of Irish workmanship.
Inside the visitor will find the cut-stone and
wood carvings and wall paintings, particularly
impressive. The style of the building is
    Hiberno-Romanesque which is unique eleventh
century native Irish mode and pre-dates the
    Norman invasion.

Points of Interest City Museum
  • The Galway Museum is essentially a folk museum
and it features a considerable number of
artifacts related to the fishing industry, which
was, and is an integral part of tradition in the
city. The museum aims to provide a cross section
of the antiques and implements that were
historically used in Galway, reflecting its
traditions. Artifacts include farm implements and
tools as well as pieces of machinery. There is an
    impressive collection of military material,
including arms. Galway's medieval heritage is
also represented in the medieval section, along
with a series of 17th century stone carvings.
