Meaning of Renaissance
  • The word Renaissance means the rebirth.
  • It happened from the 14th 17th centuries.
  • People were interested in classical things, and
    the Greco-Roman learning.
  • They questioned unreasonable beliefs and
    hadgreater freedom.
  • There were great developments in many parts
    oflife.

Causes of Renaissance
  • Some nobles went on the Crusades and many
    serfsbecame freemen. They became educated and
    hadhad more ideas about art and learning.
  • Two Popes appeared in Europe. They
    quarreledleadership and declined Churchs
    influence.
  • Gutenberg invented a movable type printing
    press.Printing was way faster than before and
    prices of books fell. More people afford to buy
    books and helped to spread ideas quickly.

Characteristics of Renaissance
  • The people paid little attention to their
    everydaylife.
  • They lived their lives to please themselves,
    andnot just to please God.
  • They were interested not only in religion, but
    alsoin classical learning and writing.
  • The people were concern about human affairs.
    Wecall these people humanists, and their
    ideashumanism.

Renaissance Influence
  • From the Renaissance, Europeans found out
    theyhad many wrong beliefs.
  • They changed their way of thinking and used used
    reasons to solve problems. This led to
    Enlightenment.
  • Enlightenment means freedom from false
    beliefsand misunderstandings. It was started by
    the educated people in 17th century.
  • The Renaissance finished the medieval times
    andstarted the modern times.

Changes in Art
  • Art in the Medieval looks dull and idol, but in
    theRenaissance, they look colourful and
    realistic.
  • Famous painter Leonardo da Vinci developed anew
    painting style. He used a dark background toout
    a 3-D effect. Mona Lisa and The Last Supper
    were examples of his works.
  • Another famous artist of the Renaissance
    isMichelangelo. He was a great craftsman.
    Pieta,David and Moses were some of his
    works.

  • In the Medieval, people believed whatever the
    church told them. In the Renaissance, people
    studyfacts and questioned church beliefs. They
    used scientific ways to solve problems.
  • Polish astronomer Copernicus found out that
    thesun was the centre of the universe and the
    earth moved round the sun.
  • Another well-known scientist Galileo discovered
    the pendulum theory and invented the
    worldsfirst telescope.

  • When people were ill in the medieval, they
    thought that this disease were sent by God
    topunish peoples sins.
  • In the Renaissance, people cut up peoples dead
    bodies and found out the cause of illnesses.
  • They learnt about blood circulation andthe

    languages instead of Latin.
  • Italian writers Dante and Boccaccio wrote the
    The Divine Comedy and The Decameronrespectiv

  • William Shakespeare was a famous English
    writer.Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of
    Venicewere examples of his famous works.

  • Renaissance builders copied ideas from
    theGreco-Romans.
  • They built dome-shaped churches with tall
    columns.
  • Buildings these days still have the
    characteristicsof Renaissances buildings, The
    Legislative Council in Hong Kong is an good
    example.

  • The People began to question Church
    teachings,this led to a religious movement
    called theReformation.
  • Reformation was started by a German monk name
    Martin Luther in 1517.
  • He protested against the wrong doings of the
    Catholic Church. He also started a new Christian
    Church called Protestantism.
