Introduction
  • Online Gaming is becoming a mainstream form of
    entertainment
  • According to a study by Pew Internet
    Studies(2003), 70 percent of college students
    play online games.
  • Three types of online games

MMORPGS
  • Derived from MUDs (Multi User Dungeons) from the
    1970s
  • Online Virtual Communities
  • Have a monthly charge

Demographic Study
  • According to a study (Ng, Wiemer-Hastings, 2005)
    which used a sample of 91 MMORPG gamers
  • 44 of the gamers played over 20 hours.
  • A similar study was done with a combination of
    Non-MMORPG gamers
  • Results showed 73 played less than 6 hours

What does this mean?
  • While the overall trend shows that there is a
    large population of casual gamers, occasional
    gamers have more of an issue with addiction.
  • Some of the effects of addiction can be
  • Failure to adjust to reality.
  • Diminishing social life.
  • Health Issues (loss of sleep, bad eating
    habits).

Possible Solutions
  • Online game Diet.
  • Slow, gradual process.
  • Make a schedule.
  • Plan out a weekly schedule to allocate time for
    playing games.
  • Replace the time
  • Replace the time playing games with other
    activities (going outdoors, doing schoolwork).
