Cabinet Technology

Definitions
  • Websters dictionary defines cabinet as a case or
cupboard usually having doors and shelves
  • The term cabinet is now generally understood as
a medium to large size piece dedicated to
storage, which is accessed by doors and may
consist of many small drawers or open shelving.

A Short History of Cabinets
  • Originally known as multitasking cabinets, the
history of kitchen cabinets is situated in 1903.
In this year, the Hoosier Manufacturing Co. of
New Castle introduced an innovative kitchen
storage and workspace, that people called
    generically, "a hoosie", a unit with a stove, a
pull-out worktop and had everything handy to
cook, including a storage area for bread, and
drawers for vegetables, cans or other condiments.

A Short History of Cabinets
  • Oak Kitchen Cupboard. The top has 3 doors and 3
drawers it is 45" wide, 12" deep. The base has 3
drawers and one door and measures 46" wide x 28"
deep x 30" tall. Combined height of both pieces
is 67" tall. Circa early 1900's.

A Short History of Cabinets
  • This grand old Sellers kitchen cabinet was named
the Mastercraft when it was introduced in the
early 1920s. It was the top of the line at that
    time. Several innovative features were
incorporated in the design of the Mastercraft. It
featured a hidden silverware drawer just above
the roll up tambour door, a pull out flour bin
and shelves in the bottom that automatically
extend when the door is opened. The white
porcelain work surface pulls out to give you more
room for food preparation. Each door is fitted on
the interior with useful metal holders and racks.
There is a spring-loaded cookbook holder that
holds the books flat while you read the recipe.

Todays Cabinets
  • Features of modern cabinets include built in
sinks, dishwashers, ovens, etc. Islands with
built in stove top units are now a big part of
    kitchen cabinetry.
  • Cabinets are now built in or hanging instead of
    stand alone units.

7
The Basics of Cabinets
  • Traditional kitchen cabinets come with more
detail, such as raised panels or Victorian
accents. The type of wood you select will bring
with it a certain style for your kitchen.
Wine-dark cherry wood fits an elegant formal
setting, while warm brown oak works in a
    Prairie-style kitchen. Honeyed pine or
cream-colored paint adds an English country
    flavor.

The Basics of Cabinets
  • Contemporary kitchen cabinets capture the
furniture and design trends of the mid-to-late
20th century. Contemporary cabinets have an
uncluttered look with few frills, clean lines,
and simple geometry. The cabinet doors could be
made of modern engineered materials instead of
traditional solid wood. Add glass shelves, for a
peek at your pretty dinnerware. If you have
    stainless steel sinks, contemporary kitchen
cabinets would complement this modern look

Local Technology
  • The local trends in Winnipeg cabinet design are
  • Consumers are opting for a thicker cabinet door
1 inch instead of ¾ inch because greater
    thickness often suggests higher quality
  • Glazed, distressed and antique finishes are
replacing ornate details once popular on many
    high-end cabinets

10
Technologies of Today
  • This indoor kitchen features glass doors, hidden
lights and an integrated sink in a stainless
    steel counter top.

11
Technologies of Today
  • All stainless steel construction with full
extension drawers make this kitchen both durable
    and functional.

12
Technologies of Today
  • The stainless steel doors look as good on the
inside as on the outside. No welds or screws are
    used to construct these doors.
  • Stainless steel is often subjected to the touch
of sweaty, oily hands which leaves an
objectionable, hard to clean stain. These cabinet
doors have been developed using an easy to clean,
    fingerprint resistant stainless steel. By
applying a microscopically thin clear coat layer,
the surface is not only resistant to
fingerprints, but a multitude of other common
    stains too.

13
Technologies of Today
  • The all stainless steel doors and drawers are
built using aerospace technology. All corners are
    welded and blemish free.
  • A light weight rigid foam is used to provide A
stiff and solid sounding door. You wont hear a
hollow sound when you knock on these doors.

14
Technologies of Today
  • Corners are laser welded to provide an
unblemished corner. The textured pattern is
perfect all the way to the seam.
  • Computer control gives precise results every time.

15
Parting Thoughts
  • Whether you decide on a classically designed
kitchen or one with the latest technology, choose
a kitchen cabinet style that works with the
overall style of your house. If your home is
contemporary, you probably wouldn't want dark
cherry cabinet doors. On the other hand, if you
live in an older home, you'll want cabinetry that
matches the original furnishings and flavor of
the home. Remember that good choices stand the
    test of time.
