Tech Specs of e-Learning
Presented By Matthew M. Zappile
2
Tech Specs of e-Learning
  • Objectives
  • Learner will be able to distinguish each of the
    separate categories of technical specifications
    for eLearning.
  • Learner will be able to assess the technical
aspects of eLearning in order to make sound
decisions on whether or not eLearning is the best
    way to deliver instruction

3
Categories of Tech Specs
  • Content Management
  • Collaborative
  • Multimedia
  • Accessibility
  • Delivery
  • Security

4
Categories of Tech Specs
  • Whiteboard Activity

5
Content Management
  • Technology that helps learners, SMEs, and
    instructional designers develop, store, and
    retrieve course materials.
  • (LMS)
  • Examples
  • Cold Fusion, HTML, Metadata (i.e., SCORM), PDF,
    Scripting (e.g.JavaScript, VBScript), XML

6
SCORM
  • Sharable Content Object Reference Model.
  • Developed by the US DOD
  • Goal To promote cooperation among government,
    corporate, and academic institutions.
  • It is a set of technical specifications that
allow instruction to be shared in a standardized
format that could be reused and moved from LMS to
LMS with little to no tweaking.
  • Easier to update over a period of time.
  • (Example Lockheed-Martin and US Air force)

7
Collaborative
  • Technology that allows for interaction among
    learners and the facilitator.
  • Examples
  • Application sharing, Audio/Video/Data
    conferencing,E-Mail, E-Rooms/Chat rooms
    (public/private), Instant Messaging, Webcasts,
    Whiteboards.

8
Multimedia
  • Technology that beefs-up the learning
    experience.
  • Examples
  • MIDI, MP3, RealAudio, SWA, WAV, Graphics/Image
    Maps, GIF, JPEG, Streaming/Data Compression,
  • Video/Animation, Animated GIF, Flash, MPEG,
    Quicktime

9
Accessibility
  • Technology that allows individuals with
    disabilities to access the instruction.
  • Examples
  • Braille keyboards, Captioning, Screen readers,
    Specialized input systems

10
Delivery
  • Technology that brings the content of the
    instruction to the learner.
  • Examples
  • CD-ROM, DVD, Internet, Intranets/LANs,Wireless/M
    obile/PDA

11
Security
  • Technology that safeguards tampering with course
    materials or tests.
  • Examples
  • Login/Password, Firewalls, Encryption
  • (National Security Issues)
