Successful RE/MAX local qualifying events
depend on planning, staffing, promotion and
execution. Site directors should schedule
local qualifying events as far in advance as
possible. Dates and sites appear on the LDC
website (www.longdrivers.ca) and are seen each
day by hundreds of potential competitors around
the country. Each local qualifying event feeds
into a district event in the same geographic
area. Dates and sites for district qualifying
events, which take place in August and
September, are published in the spring. Site
directors can plan their local qualifying events
accordingly. Step one in hosting a RE/MAX WLDC
local qualifier is posting the dates for local
qualifying events. Step two is staffing.
Experience shows that the most effective local
qualifying events involve a crew of roughly 6-10
volunteers (LDC recommends a minimum of six).
These different positions include the
following .Site Director Oversees all facets
of the event .Official Scorer Handles official
scoring, maintains the leader board and monitors
the time .Registrar Registers competitors,
collects entry fees .Ball caller Supervises
teeing area, calls direction of each shot on
walkie talkie, monitors the time limit, enforces
teeing violations
5. Grid Workers (2) Handle each side of the
competition grid, report results back to the
scorers table/ball caller/, measure longest
drives and keep the grid clear. Having a
replacement pair of grid workers is recommended
so is having a volunteer to relieve the other
positions to allow for breaks, etc. Step three
of administering a local qualifying event is
promotion. LDC provides each site director with
a site director packet that contains local
qualifying event posters and press
releases. Printed RE/MAX WLDC materials should
receive prominent display at the host facility,
as well as wide distribution in the local market
area. Press releases should be sent to media
(newspapers, TV, radio) to generate
pre-publicity. Many site directors also work
with local RE/MAX offices to increase exposure
for the event others line up sponsors and
marketing partners to defray expenses and
increase participation (new partners may not
conflict with current sponsors). The final
step for administering a local qualifying event
is execution. Execution refers to creating the
platform for a smooth-running and efficient event
at which a maximum number of competitors can hit
during the specified time frame. The topic of
execution encompasses such items as assembling
materials (including golf balls), grid
preparation, food and beverage concessions,
warm-up area and simultaneous hitting. Materials
required for a local qualifying event
include .3 walkie talkies extra batteries

2. Sprinkler flags/markers (see diagram on
page 10) 3. Tables/chairs (tent) for official
scorer and registrar 4. Registration forms
(LDC provides) 5. Score sheets (LDC
provides) 6. Stop watch/timing device Golf
balls used in the competition carry the Pinnacle
brand name, the official golf ball for the RE/MAX
WLDC. Pinnacle balls are imprinted 1 or 2,
which permits two hitters on the tee at the same
time. This procedure speeds the process and
allows site directors to increase the number of
tries. Grid preparation should follow these
guidelines (see page 15) The grid should start
at 200 yards and continue to 400 yards (if
available). The grid should be 4050 yards wide.
Yardage should be marked every ten yards with
turf paint (like a football field). Flags
providing visual definition of the grid for
competitors should mark all four corners of the
grid. The grid should have no obstructions
(bunkers, trees, water hazards, etc.). Food and
Beverage LDC recommends site directors have
water available for competitors near the teeing
and warm-up area. Site directors have the option
to place concessions in the vicinity of the
teeing area. (As RE/MAX WLDC competitors burn
big calories and need nourishment during the
competition, concessions can create a revenue
stream for the facility). Warm-up Area To
expedite the hitting process and reduce delays,
warm-up areas should be located as close to the
teeing area as feasible. Players warming up
should be told, repeatedly, to hit away from the
competition grid.
Simultaneous Hitting LDC strongly encourages
having two competitors on the tee at the same
time. The first person called to the tee hits
from the left side with balls marked 1 the
second player hits from the right side with balls
marked 2. Competitors alternate hitting their
shots (1 goes first) and have five minutes to
complete their try. Hitters may switch sides of
the tee after player 2 completes his third ball
and before player 1 hits his fourth ball. If
one hitter wants to switch, they must
switch. The Call The ball caller notifies grid
workers when a player is ready to hit. He
informs the grid workers as follows Player 1,
ball 1 Player 2, ball 1 Player 1, ball 2
Player 2, ball 2 and so on through the round.
With each swing, the ball caller indicates the
flight and direction of the drive and when the
ball will land (High and left...coming
down...now.). This allows grid workers to call
in approximate yardages quickly. NOTE DO NOT
MEASURE EACH SHOT. ONLY REPORT APPROXIMATE
YARDAGES. THIS SPEEDS UP PLAY AND ALLOWS MORE
COMPETITORS TO ENTER.

THE OFFICIAL RULES OF LOCAL QUALIFYING
8
Sample of Competition Grid
400
Definition of a Qualified Drive A qualified
drive must be a minimum of 270 yards for the
Open Division, 250 yards for the Senior Division,
230 yards for the Super Senior Division, 210
yards for the Grand Champion division and 200
yards for the Ladies Division that comes to rest
within the boundaries of the competition grid,
and has not come in contact with the ground or
other objects outside the gridlines. A qualified
drive cannot land out of play and then come back
into play. A drive that does not meet the
specified yard line is considered out of play.
Bad weather may result in the minimum being
lowered. This will be at the discretion of the
Site Director. Official Golf Balls LDC will
provide site directors with Pinnacle Gold Long
Drive golf balls. Once the Competitor receives
the official golf balls from the Site Director,
those balls must be kept visible in the teeing
area at all times (do not put them in pockets,
bags or with anyone else). A ball must come to
rest within the designated boundaries of the
Competition Grid. A ball touching any part of
the grid line is considered in play. A ball not
reaching the Grid is considered out of play. A
ball coming into contact with any obstruction
(i.e. bunker, water, tree, etc.) inside or
outside the Grid which does not come to rest in
the Grid, is considered out of play. No replays
or considerations are permitted. Measurement of
Drives Drives will be measured from the tee
line to the farthest point of the golf ball.
Distance will include carry and roll of the
ball. Recording Drives Each of the Competitors
drives will be recorded on the Official Score
sheet. If a Competitor hits a qualified drive
that is considered one of the six longest of the
day in their Competitive Division the location of
the ball will be accurately

marked (and if needed measured) with a sprinkler
flag, indicating the core- sponding Division, and
place. In Case of a Tie In the event there
are two (2) or more identical distances recorded,
(within 6 inches of another competitors drive, is
deemed a tie), those tied competitors will hit
three (3) additional balls to determine the final
winning drive, but only if it is for 1st place or
the last place to qualify. This process will
continue until a winner is declared. If one of
the competitors is not present for the playoff,
then the player that is present will be deemed
the winner. The hitting order will remain the
same as originally registered on the Official
Score sheet. Regional Qualification Formula A
minimum of one competitor and a maximum of six
Competitors from each Competitive Division will
advance to the Regional Qualification Event. The
number of Competitors qualifying for the Regional
Qualification Event depends on the TOTAL number
of tries in each Division at each event (please
see schedule on page 11). The first place winner
of the local qualifying event in both Open and
Senior Divisions will not participate in round
one of the regional qualifying event and will be
granted a bye into the second round at the
Regional Qualifying Event (does not apply to
other divisions). In some cases, Competitors who
qualify at Local Qualification Events may not be
available to participate in their respective
Regional Qualification Event. If this occurs,
LDC will refer to the Official Score sheet from
the event and contact an alternate competitor in
the order of their results. The alternate will
be offered the opportunity to participate at the
Regional Qualification Event. Amateur or
Professional Status In all cases, USGA Rules of
Amateur Status will apply. Any competitor may
compete as a professional and
accept prize money. Competitors must declare
their status before the RE/MAX World Finals
begin. There are no exceptions. Golf
Equipment For local qualifying events no club
used may appear on the USGA Non-Conforming List
(www.usga.org). For regional qualifying events
and World Finals, all clubs used must appear on
the LDA Conforming List (www.longdrivers.com).
In addition, no club may exceed the club-length
limit of 50 inches, and are subject to inspection
by an LDC staff member or site director. (See
illustration below on how to measure the length
of club for LDC competition use.)
10
Golf Etiquette Proper golf etiquette is
required during all levels of the competition.
At no time will disorderly conduct, abusive
language, intoxication and/or possession or use
of an illegal substance be tolerated. Violations
of this rule shall be cause for immediate
expulsion from the event and forfeiture of all
monies paid. The LDC has the right to refuse
service to anyone for transgressions of this
rule. Dress Code To the extent the host
facility dress code is stricter than that of the
LDCs, all competitors must adhere to the host
facility dress code. All contestants must wear a
collared golf shirt (no tank tops), slacks, golf
shorts (jeans not allowed at any LDC events) and
the appropriate footwear (softspikes or metal
spikes). It is the responsibility of each
competitor to know the dress code of the
site. Food and Beverage During a Local
Qualification Event, only soft drinks and/or
water are permitted in the teeing area.
Alcoholic beverages are not permitted during the
competition. Promotional Rights The site
grants permission to the LDC to use their name
and likeness for promotional rights. In Case of
Discrepancies, Decisions and Interpretation of
Rules The appointed Site Director shall make
all decisions on site pertaining to
interpretations of the Official Rules,
postponement of the event, rescheduling and all
other decisions affecting the outcome of the
event. Long Drivers of Canada is the final
arbiter of the event and, as such, any decision
or interpretation of the Official Rules by the
LDC shall stand.
