3Wales is the friendy green hilly bit on the
western side of Britain. Were about 2 hours west
of London by rail or by road,youll find that
Wales is a very different place. First threes
the languageits one of the oldest in
Europe,spoken fluently by about one in five of
the population. Although all Welsh speak English
as well. Wales covers an area of around 8,000
square miles(or 20,800 square kilometres). Weve
got 3 National Parks and 5 Areas of Outstanding
Natural Beauty,all part of a landscape that
offers opportunities for everybody.
Walking,cycling,climbing,golf,mountain biking and
paragliding are just the beginning of the list.
The population currently stands at around 3
million people. Famous sons and daughters of
Wales you will have heard of include Richard
Burton,Sir Tom Jones,Sir Anthony Hopkins and
Catherine Zeta-Jones. And of other people have
been tracing their Welsh ancestry
recently-including Tom Cruise,Susan
Sarandon,Russell Crowe and Kylie Minogue. There
are also lots and lots of castles(over 400 at the
last count),the Welsh National Opera(one of the
worlds premier Opera Companies),the largest
single-span glasshouse in the world(at the
National Botanic Garden of Wales),and a cool flag
with a Red Dragon on it. The capital city is
Cardiff. The Romans had a fortress here in the
first Century AD. It was officially designated as
capital in 1955.
NORTH WALES North Wales is
walkersparadiseSnowdonia National Park boasts
the highest mountain in England and
Wales,Angleseys full of spectacular sea
cliffs,and the Borderlans offer tons of historic
places to explore. Climbing Mount Snowdon is ONE
of those things everyone needs to do.

- It was a small town until the early nineteenth
century and came to prominence as a major port
for the transport of coal following the arrival
of industry in the region. It eventually grew to
become the largest city in Wales and serves as a
major centre of culture, sport and history in the
United Kingdom. Cardiff was made a city in 1905,
proclaimed capital of Wales in 1955 and is today
the 10th largest city in the United Kingdom.
6- Cardiff is Europes youngest capital and has
developed a cool reputation in the last few
years.Extensive re-development has given Cardiff
world-class sporting and entertainment
complexes.Add to this excellent shopping,diverse
restaurants and plenty of art,history and

back to Roman times,and Cardiff Castle,right at

7the brecon beacons
- The beacons start at to the north of walesthere
is a greater contrast between the industrial
valleys and the glorious scenery of the 500
square mile Brecon Beacons National Park. - The attractive town of Brecon lies under the
shadow of Pen-y-Fan and is most famous.Another
pretty village of Crickhowell,it is surrounded by
mountains. - Located in the west of the beacon the Dan-yr-Ogof
caves are the largest caves in Western Europe,
recently voted Britain's Finest Natural Wonder.
8CAERNARFON Few British towns can claim to have
been inhabited without a break since pre roman
times,and the evidence of the towns historical
past abounds.In the vicinity of the town Three
are many prehistoric remains,and in the town
itself are the remains of Segontium,a Roman
military fort.The jewel of Caernarfon though is
its vast medieval fortress built whilst
conquering North Wales.It is undoubtedly one of
the most architecturally impressive castles in
the country,with a strong Eastern Roman
influence.Edward Is firstborn son was born in
the castle,hence why it is now customary to call
the first born son of a British monarch the
Prince of Wales.This tradition still lives,and
the castle was the venue for Prince Charles
investiture in 1969.Caernarfon is a bustling
market town with a wide selection of shops,good
eating places and attractive accommodation.It is
also a wonderful location for exploring the
rugged wilderness of the Snowdonia National Park.
9SWANSEA BAY A city perfectly situated on the edge
of a five-mile bay,Swansea is a

was founded as a Roman Fort,and Britains most
westerly fortress Moridunum was situated here.You
can see what remains of the large amphitheatre on
Priory Street.As Carmarthenshires largest
commercial town,Carmarthen hosts a bustling
Farmers Market on Wednesdays,and is an ideal way
to see how significantthe rural economy is to the
community.The remains of Carmarthens Norman
Castle are central to the town,and picturesque
18th and
1019th century architecture can be found at the
base of the castle,close to the Carmarthens main
shopping areas.History is never far away in
Carmarthen,from the classic Georgian architecture
to the Coaching Inns,a nod once again to the
areas rich agricultural heritage.The Guildhall,an
imposing 18th Century edifice stands on Knott
Square,and nearby is the Indoor market,an
excellent place to sample locally produced
delicacies such as Carmarthenshire Ham,and
Penclawdd Cockles.

- The sea surrounds Wales on three of its sides.
Its 750-mile (1,200-km) coastline is infinitely
varied. Much of the coastline is rich in natural
beauty. - From north to south the coast was the clared
hertitage of natural beauty for the cleanliness
of the sand and waters.
