Title: COUNTRY BREAKOUT SESION

1
COUNTRY BREAKOUT SESION
  • CASE OF VIETNAM

2
THE MOST IMPORTANT CLIMATE CHANGE IMPLICATIONS
  • In biodiversity
  • with the global warming, tropical crop species
(adaptive to hot climate) will expand while the
subtropical species (adaptive to cooler climate)
will be reduced (and move to higher altitudes).
Boundary of plants will likely move to the North,
forest structure (between primitive and secondary
forests) may change considerably, some precious
    plants may disappear
  • a considerable area of Red and Mekong deltas will
be innundated due to sea level rise, saline
intrusion, that affects habitat of many species

3
THE MOST IMPORTANT CLIMATE CHANGE IMPLICATIONS
  • Water resources
  • drought may become more serious in the
    mountainous areas
  • high fluctuation of flows in rivers, causing
floods and water scarcity in different times of
    the year
  • water pollution in dry season can make the water
unusable for many purposes, thus exaggerate water
    scarcity

4
THE MOST IMPORTANT CLIMATE CHANGE IMPLICATIONS
  • Food security
  • flood and drought will happen with higher
frequency and intensity affect the crop yields
  • sea level rise will reduce areas of mangrove
forest, causing negative impacts on forest on
alkaline soil in Southern areas, thus threat the
    sources of food for farmers
  • high temperature and dought mau cause wild fire,
stimulate development of pests and diseases
heavy rain may cause short-term shock in
salinity, that may kill some kinds of molluses

5
THE MOST IMPORTANT CLIMATE CHANGE IMPLICATIONS
  • Rural livelihood
  • climate change may increase threat to the
habitats of some species, that affect the
    livelihood of rural population,
  • climate change can also cause degradation of
coral reefs, migration of aquatic species,
affecting the livelihood og coastal population
  • drought and floods (flash lood and water logging)

6
ADAPTATION MEASURES
  • Water resources
  • Vietnam plans to construct new reservoirs for an
additional capacity of 15-20 bill. m3 to ensure
    water supply during dry time
  • Upgrade and expand scales of drainage system to
    mitigate flooding
  • Upgrade sea dyke system and construct new dykes
    as necessary
  • Optimize water use and combine water exploitation
    with environmental protection

7
ADAPTATION MEASURES
  • Agriculture
  • Select and develop a suitable crop mix
  • Change the farming pattern in some innundated
areas, from pure paddy rice cultivation to shift
    between rice cultivation and aquaculture
  • Develop aquaculture for brackish water areas,
especially in the Middle of Vietnam establish
    natural ecological protection areas, especially
    at the coral reefs
  • Planning and optimization of water use for
    irrigation
  • Develop irrigation system as necessary
  • Breeding new high resistent crop species
  • Develop new farming technology
  • The above measures contribute to ensure food
    security and improve rural livelihood

8
ADAPTATION MEASURES
  • Forestry
  • Increase forest cover, especially at the
    watersheds and mangrove forest
  • Protect natural forests and gradually prohobit
exploitation of natural forest, prevent forest
    fires
  • Breeding new plant species of high resistance to
    conditions of climate change
  • The above measures contribute to ensure food
    security and improve rural livelihood

9
ADAPTATION MEASURES
  • Disaster risk management
  • Taking into account sea level rise into design
and consgtruction of habor, ports, shipdocks,
    water wharfs
  • Develop and intensify dyke system to protect
    agricultural and aquaculture areas
  • Develop shelter places for boats/ships along the
    coasts and at the islands
  • Change the living custom/habit to suit the new
    conditions of SLR
  • Perform complete protection to cope with SLR
    effectively
  • The above measures contribute to ensure food
    security and improve rural livelihood
