Title: Nurse Practitioner Clinics Gaining Ground

1
Nurse Practitioner Clinics Gaining Ground
  • Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who
have pursued additional education for specific
specialties and are licensed to perform many of
the tasks required by routine care.

2
  • This past November 9 through the 15th (2011) was
a special week for nurse practitioners throughout
the United States. That's because it was National
Nurse Practitioner week with this years theme
being, "Your Partner in Health - The Nurse
    Practitioner."

3
  • All over the country the career choice was being
recognized within the healthcare community and
promoted as a great option for people looking to
start a new career. Indeed, it is a growing field
which is experiencing greater opportunities for
nurse practitioners to be more directly involved
    in patient care.

4
  • Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who
have pursued additional education for specific
specialties and are licensed to perform many of
the tasks required by routine care. They can
write prescriptions, make routine diagnoses, and
    even run standard diagnostic tests.

5
  • Not only are nurse practitioners a great asset to
doctors, it's now becoming more common for them
to run their own practices which provide primary
    care for patients.

6
Appalachian Nurse Practitioner Clinic
  • Consider the Appalachian Nurse Practitioner
Clinic in Dahlonega, Georgia as a great example
of this phenomenon. The clinic was opened in 2006
and has since provided services to roughly 5,000
    patients.

7
  • The clinic was originally established with the
help of the Health Resources and Services
Administration (HRSA) in order to provide primary
care for individuals living in the surrounding
area. The key to the clinic's success lies in the
fact that it can provide most of the same
services one would find at a family doctor's
practice yet at a significantly lower cost.

8
  • Clinics like these are popping up all over the
country as demand for affordable health care
continues to rise. In fact, the HRSA continues to
support such clinics by offering grants to aid
    further development.

9
  • The Appalachian clinic just received an
additional 1.8 million to establish satellite
clinics that would expand services outward. By
supporting nurse practitioner clinics the HRSA
hopes to make affordable health care accessible
to people with limited financial resources.

10
The Same Is Happening in Canada
  • While nurse practitioner clinics are not catching
on in the United States as quickly as some would
hope, they are spreading like wildfire north of
the border. Just this past week (November 2011) a
new clinic opened in Saulte St. Marie with a
capacity of more than 3,000 patients annually.

11
  • The provincial government of Ontario has even
developed a special program to encourage the
establishment of such clinics in order to meet
the healthcare needs of its citizens. One after
another, nurse practitioner clinics are becoming
a mainstay of the Canadian healthcare system.

12
  • Becoming a nurse practitioner is a wise career
choice for individuals who enjoy the healthcare
field. There are opportunities in all sorts of
    specialties including family practice,
pediatrics, cardiology, urology, and so on.

13
  • And with the current nationwide shortage of
    healthcare professionals of all disciplines,
there will be plenty of work available for many
years to come. It is a career choice that offers
stability, excellent salary and benefits, and the
personal satisfaction of being able to provide
    care for those in need.
