Collecting and Appreciating Folding Fan
  • The collection of fan painting and folding
fan starts at the same time. However, it was
scl-dom seen of folding fan produced in Ming and
    early Qing Dynasties.
  • When collecting folding fan, for one thing we
must find fans painted and inscribed by the
famous painters and calligraphers, for another we
must have the ability to recognize the worth of
masterpiece by artists. Fan-cover must be full
and neat, painting and calligraphy must be clear,
the price goes down greatly if it had dust,
stains, pigment losses, flaking pigments, and
creases or tears. When this happened, fan-cov-ers
needs to be removed from its fan ribs and mounted
again after cleaning and repairing have been
    done.

  • Folding fan should be stored in box made of
wood to protect it from mildew. The best way to
prevent moths is to use insecticide like
Moth-balls in box a week before excited insects
(Chinese season) in spring to kill moths when
they are eggs. In autumn, the room can be
deco-rated with unfolded fans on the table for a
few days, which is also the important step for
kill-ing moths and mildew by sunlight.

  • A folding fan consists of fan painting and
cal-ligraphy and fan-rib engraved with beautiful
design. It can be appreciated respectively or in
a whole. Fan-cover with neat and exquisite
painting and calligraphy is the best. Fan-rib is
engraved with elegant design or folk-custom
design. The excellent fan painting and
cal-ligraphy supplemented each other. We mainly
collect folding fan, silk mounted on a rigid
frame in a small round or oval shape and paper
pressed into folds with tihin sticks of bamboo
inserted for support, considering whether the fan
    is real, exquisite, and new.

    calligraphy, painting, carving, design and
various other genres of fine arts and had
developed into a genre of colorful fan-art.

5
