Agenda

  • Where do we count?
  • What were the results this year?
  • What are the trends?
  • Conclusions and Next Steps

3
Why are footfall counts important?
  • What is a footfall count?
  • Where are footfall counts used?
  • What can footfall counts tell us?

4
Where do we count?
  • Red Lion Square
  • High Street West
  • High Street East
  • Ironmonger Street
  • St. Marys Street
  • St. Marys Hill
  • Broad Street
  • Horseshoe Lane
  • Sheep Market

5
What were the results this year? - Spring
  • Both days were cool, dry and overcast
  • On Wednesday the busiest street was High Street
West with an average of 1006 people per hour
  • On Friday the busiest street was Broad Street
with an average of 1,884 people per hour.
However, as was noted in the spring the High
    Street data looks suspect
  • On average, across all locations there are twice
as many people in the town on Friday as Wednesday

6
What were the results this year? - Summer
  • Friday was cool and overcast but Wednesday was
    warm and sunny
  • On Wednesday the busiest street was High Street
West with an average of 1,626 people per hour
(across the three hours), just ahead of High
    Street East by 18 people
  • On Friday the busiest street was High Street West
an average of 3,284 per hour the busiest Friday
    since records began!
  • On average, across all locations there were just
more than twice as many people in the town on
    Friday as Wednesday

7
What were the results this year? - Summer
  • For the first time this year a short count was
carried out every Friday morning in High Street
West from early July to late August.
  • Two 10 minute counts between 10am and 11am.
  • Average footfall across all counts of 2,650 per
    hour.

8
What are the trends?
9
Conclusions and Next Steps
  • The town is as vibrant today as it was three
    years ago
  • Summer is busier than Spring by 50 on a
Wednesday but not so significant on a Friday
  • The market is a major drawirrespective of time
    of year
  • We will be able to use this data to benchmark
with the 11 Welland Market Towns and Grantham to
develop a view of relative town centre prosperity
  • SKDC are looking into automatic counters
