Title: Wiring and Drops

1
Wiring and Drops
  • How are we going to connect this thing???

2
What is the Existing Layout???
  • Currently the whole UC-Center is connected by a
    DSL modem.
  • This creates a problem as more people try to
access data that is outside of the building.
  • The internal wiring of the building utilizes a
    poorly designed punch block system.

3
Where are we coming from?
  • We are going to use existing conduits to the
UC-Center from Siemens Hall that run along
Redwood Hall . These conduits are currently being
used by the Resnet dual FDDI Ring.
  • Our entrance facility is located on the Second
level of the UC-Center in IDF 10.
  • From IDF 10 we have fiber running to the IDF
20-70. IDF 70 is not currently being used but
will be wired for future expansion.

4
What are we going to do??
  • We are going to replace all of the old data
    wiring with new CAT5e wiring.
  • All of the existing voice wiring will remain in
place, but we are going pull wiring for voice to
all of the existing data drops. By wiring now,
this will save the UC-Center money on the future
if they decide to replace their existing voice
    systems.
  • All of the data lines will be connected to the
nearest switches or hubs that will be in each
    IDF.

5
Why are we doing it this way??
  • The existing data wiring was poorly constructed.
  • Rewiring will create a faster and more secure
connection to the world outside of the UC-Center.
  • It will make upgrades in the future much easier.

Labor Costs
  • How much money is it going to take to install all
    of this equipment and wiring???

8
We have 2 different types of labor that we are
utilizing.
  • STUDENT LABOR
  • Cheap
  • Efficient
  • Worked in the residence halls!
  • Creates jobs for HSU students.
  • For installation of wiring and jacks.
  • PROFESSIONAL LABOR
  • For installation of major equipment and fiber
    wiring.
  • Includes construction and hazardous work.
  • Testing of equipment and overall wiring.

NICs
  • What NICs (network interface cards) are we going
    to use??

11
What NICs are we using?
  • We are going to keep the existing NICs that are
    installed in each computer.
  • They should be sufficient for the work that is
    currently being done.
  • If we need new NICs our group recommends the
Netgear FA310tx bases on its price of 17 and its
    ease of setting up.
