Introduction

• A theme of this semester seems to be that
  individuals are going on a journey, or looking
  for the ultimate answers, and usually ends in
  failure. Lesson learned is the importance of the
  journey itself.
• This same theme continues throughout the
  Humanities sequence.

Gilgamesh

• After Enkidus death, Gilgamesh goes on a journey
  to find the key to immortality from Uta-napishti.
• Learns there is no hope for immortality and even
  has the thorny plant that will rejuvenate him
  stolen by a snake.

Code of Hammurabi Art of War

• Both of these works provide guidelines on how
  society should be structured and conquests
  achieved.
• Lack of common sense in some laws.
• No details for strategy in war.

Hippocrates and Adam Eve

• Both are searching for greater knowledge.
• Hippocrates Oath being altered.
• Adam and Eve more notable for failure as
  they gain knowledge but are
  punished by being expelled from
  Paradise.

Moses

• Moses went on his own journey leading his people
  through the desert.
• Brings Ten Commandments down to sinners.
• Hesitation keeps him from Promised
  Land.

A Look Ahead at 201

• Odysseus makes his own journey to Ithaca.
• Must use several disguises to overcome many
  obstacles on his trip home.
• Seems that he is one of the few whose misfortune
  finally comes to an end and achieves what he
  sought.

Look Ahead to 202

• Dante and his guide Virgil make a trip into Hell.
• Constantly needs protection
  and reassurance from Virgil
  to continue.
• Eventually finds his way to
  heaven.

Look Ahead to 203

• Faust is subject of bet between God and Mephisto.
• Faust went on his search for knowledge and
  faced temptation along
  the way.
• Goethes Fausts soul saved experiences on
  journey important as end goal
  was unobtainable.

Conclusion

• Seems to be a need to find more in ones life.
• This desire rarely seems to be satisfied
• From to 201 to 203, people are still on their
  journey.
• Importance of journey itself and not the outcome.
• Guides of those on their journey important.
