Title: When writing your application package, keep the following in mind :

1
When writing your application package, keep the
following in mind
  • The letter of application and résumé work
together to give a potential employer an overview
    of your qualifications.
  • Information in the letter is auxiliary to the
information in the résumé, and vice versa.
  • Use the two documents to amplify each other.

2
Three Main Tasks in Planninga Job Search
  • Do a self-inventory.
  • Learn about the employers.
  • Prepare your materials.

3
Seven Ways to Search for a Position
  • a college or university placement office
  • a professional placement bureau
  • a published job advertisement
  • an organization's Web site
  • a job board on the Internet
  • an unsolicited letter to an organization
  • connections

4
Three Reasons to Write Your Own Résumé
  • You know yourself better than anyone else does.
  • Employment officers know the style of the local
    agencies.
  • If you write your own résumé, you will be more
likely to adapt it to different situations.

5
Résumés should
  • feature generous margins
  • employ clear type
  • be well-balanced
  • demonstrate clear organization
  • use serif (text) and sans serif (headings) fonts
    appropriately
  • employ other design elements (spacing, white
space, bold, various font sizes, etc.) to
increase attractiveness and accessibility for the
    reader

6
Characteristics of Effective Résumés
  • The résumé must be honest.
  • The résumé must be completely free of errors.
  • The résumé must provide clear, specific
    information, without generalizations or
    self-congratulation.
  • The résumé must use a standard format.
  • The résumé must be linked to the letter in
format, paper quality, and printer quality.

7
Two Common Résumé Styles
  • chronological
  • analytical
  • (in both, remember to use reverse chronological
    order for all entries)

8
Elements of a Chronological Résumé
  • identifying information
  • job objectives
  • education
  • employment history
  • interests and activities
  • references

9
Suggestions for Drafting a Statement of
Objectives
  • State only the goals or duties explicitly
mentioned, or clearly implied, in the job
    advertisement.
  • Avoid meaningless generalities.
  • Consider customizing your résumé by including the
name of the company to which you are applying.

10
Include at least the following information in the
education section
  • the degree (abbreviation or spelled out
    correctly)
  • the institution (including location)
  • the date of graduation (expected or actual)
  • information about other schools you attended
  • your GPA (as discussed in class)

11
For important jobs, focus on one or more of the
following factors
  • results you have achieved
  • documents you have written
  • clients you have served
  • skills you have acquired
  • equipment you have operated
  • money you have earned for the organization
  • personnel you have supervised

12
Steps in Providing References
  • Decide how you want to present the references.
  • Choose your referees carefully.
  • Give the potential referee an opportunity to
    decline gracefully.
  • Consider adding an extra sheet for your
    references, divided into Professional and
Academic References. Format this sheet the same
    as your résumé.

13
Other résumé sections are eitherdiscretionary or
appropriate for only some job seekers
  • computer skills
  • military experience
  • language ability
  • willingness to relocate
  • hobbies or activities

14
Elements of an Analytical Résumé
  • identifying information
  • job objective
  • skills
  • education
  • employment history
  • interests and activities
  • references

15
Functions of the Introductory Paragraph of a
Job-Application Letter
  • It identifies your source of information.
  • It identifies the position you are interested in.
  • It states that you wish to be considered for the
    position.
  • It forecasts the rest of the letter.

16
Elements of the Concluding Paragraph
  • a reference to your résumé
  • a polite but confident request for an interview
  • your phone number and e-mail address (unless
provided in the return address section of your
    letter)
