American Association of Teachers of German
The mission of the AATG is based on the belief
that bringing the language, literatures and
cultures of the German-speaking world to all
Americans is a vital humanistic endeavor which
serves essential national interests. It's the
only national individual membership organization
dedicated to the advancement and improvement of
the language, literature, and culture of the
German-speaking countries. With almost 5,500
members, the AATG is for teachers of German at
all levels of instruction and all those
interested in the teaching of German. AATG
represents members' interests before government
agencies here and abroad and with other education
organizations. National AATG members are members
of one of sixty-one local chapters which support
a variety of meetings and projects (summer camps,
inservice, immersion weekends, German language
fairs, award ceremonies). There are five local
chapters in New England.

Schools Supported by the Consulate
The German International School Boston offers
classes ranging from Preschool through Grade 6.
Each year, the school will progressively extend
its program to higher grades, eventually offering
a complete school program from Preschool through
Grade 12. It provides a bilingual education in
German and English with a focus on the
humanities, math, and science. Students will
graduate with a diploma recognized nationally and
internationally. This school is supported by
Central Office of Schools Abroad (BVA-ZfA).
The Waldorf School in Lexington, MA is a Pre-K
through Grade 8 independent school, offering a
broad-based, curriculum with varied programs. The
school serves 250 students with 54 full and
part-time faculty and staff members. The school
is a member of the Association of Independent
Schools in New England and accredited by the
Association of Waldorf Schools of North America
and the New England Association of Schools and
Colleges. This school is supported by Central
Office of Schools Abroad (BVA-ZfA).

German Saturday Schools
The purpose of the German Saturday School Boston
is to teach the German language and to acquaint
students with the cultural aspects in
German-speaking countries. The program is
designed to enable students to communicate in
German and to prepare them for successful
participation in German courses in college. This
school is supported by Central Office of Schools
Abroad (BVA-ZfA).
The German School of Connecticut provides German
language and culture instruction for children
and adults. Besides offering classroom
activities, it provides an international and
intercultural environment and a forum for
US-German friendship. It offers a modern view
and an up-to-date picture of life in German
speaking countries. This school is supported by
Central Office of Schools Abroad (BVA-ZfA).

Summer Schools
The annual German Summer School on the Atlantic
is sponsored by the University of Rhode Island.
The program offers intensive German language
instruction at all proficiency levels and
courses on German culture and literature. It is
open to students, teachers and business profession
als of all ages.
Since 1915, the undergraduate and graduate
programs of Die Deutsche Schule at Middlebury
College have been among the most prestigious in
the U.S. Courses in German language,
literature, linguistics and cultural studies lead
to B.A., M.A. and Doctor of Modern Languages
degrees. In collaboration with the Monterey
Institute, the college is developing more
career-driven courses of study in German.

Six-week German classes feature interactive
games, articles on current events and class
discussions.
St. Pauls School in Concord, New Hampshire,
founded the Advanced Studies Program in 1958 to
provide talented high school juniors with
challenging educational opportunities. During the
four weeks of courses in the summer, students
practice German and learn about Germany.

Deutsches Theaterfest Mount Holyoke College South
Hadley, MA Groups from elementary, middle, high
schools and colleges participate in the annual
German Theater Festival and Competition at
Mount Holyoke College. It is the only such
festival in existence in the U.S. It shows that
German as a foreign language is not only taught,
but also lived in schools in New England
and the Northeast.
