The Kent Regional Library is a 22,000 sq. ft.
building located in the city of Kent. After
undergoing renovation they re-opened in
September,1991. The residents of the city voted
to annex to the King County Library System in
1993 The medium sized library serves between
1,000 to 2,000 patrons per day, they just
recently installed a People Counter System, so
theyll have a more accurate number of people
served daily, when the system is up-and running.
5
Their cliental is a mixture of all age groups and
mostly comes from the community. Kent Regional
has a collection of 150,000 books and they are
adding new books all the time the Librarian at
the Reference desk told me. Their quiet reading
area and magazine racks were being used and
seemed to be quit popular. The Reference area is
medium sized with lots of books on the shelves,
but no one was browsing the shelves when I was
there.
6
The Childrens Department is a large colorful
area surrounded on two sides by book shelves that
are waist high and filled with books and
magazines, tall book shelves line the wall on the
west side of the building. The furniture in this
area is scaled down for small children. There are
two larger wooden lounge type benches for adults
to use.

There is 1 computer used for access to the
library catalog and 4 small computers placed on
small tables, they were all in use when I was
there. There are small tables and chairs through
out the area. A pole in the area has a large
stuffed dragon with huge fanning ears, wrapped
around it, that Im sure appeals to children.

8
To the left of the door as you enter the Library
is their Media Department. Chest high shelves
surround this area and three racks with items on
both sides are in the middle. Adult, teen and
childrens item are in this area. Their
collection consist of VHS video movies 3200
DVDs 1900 Cassettes 600 This includes books
on tape CDs 5700 CD ROMs 137
9
Although the library database lists 1900 DVDs,
there were only 200 or so on the shelf, the
Librarian who assisted me said they were popular
and always checked out he and another librarian
discussed where they would put them, if they all
were returned at the same time, as the Library
does not have space for them all. VHS does not
appear to be as popular as DVDs, there were quite
a number of them left on the shelves.
10
The Teen area has books that surround the area
on three sides and tables in the center. This
area was almost empty. Audio books are next, on
the west wall, there were 4400 items in this
collection. The Computer area is surrounded by
the Childrens area, Media and the Teen area.
There are 80 computers and most of them were in
use, they were in three rows with printers on
tables at both ends of each row. There are 3
black white printers and 1 color printer.
There is 1 Magic Magnification machine for the
visually impaired to use, 1 typewriter, and
wireless connect through out the building.
11
The computer area was full of people from teens
to adults and seemed to be the busiest area in
the library. A Minolta MS6000 microfilm machine
and microfilm stored in cabinets is on the east
side of the room. There are 3 shelves of Holds on
4 racks with items on both sides of the
racks There are 2 copying machines on the south
wall of the building, next to the Circulation
desk.
12
The Circulation desk seemed to be quite busy as
there was a long line when I was there. This
library has self check-out machines and I was
told they were popular. but there was only one
person using one at the time I was there. The
library has 1 overhead projector and one slide
projector that can be used in their meeting
rooms. The conference room has a TV set and a
Video, DVD Player combination. There is 1
typewriter in the library.
