  • Those pesky titles!
  • What do I capitalize?
  • When do I underline?
  • When do I put them in quotation marks?
  • What a conundrum!

What Do I Capitalize?
  • The words a, an, and the are only capitalized
    when they are the FIRST word of a title.
  • An Officer and a Gentleman
  • The Owl and the Pussycat

What Do I Capitalize?
  • Conjunctions (and, but, or, for, so, and yet) are
    only capitalized when they are the FIRST word of
    a title.

What Do I Capitalize?
  • Prepositions (on, in, under, around, etc.) are
    only capitalized when they are the FIRST word of
    a title OR when they have five or more letters.

When to Underline/Italicize
  • If a work is long in length, such as a novel,
    then its title is Underlined if handwritten or
    placed in Italics if typed.
  • Romeo and Juliet (handwritten)
  • Romeo and Juliet (typed)
  • On the shelf!
  • If a title is long enough or large enough,
    place it on the shelf

  • Titles of government or religious documents DO
    NOT get underlined OR italicized OR placed in
    quotation marks. They are only capitalized
  • The Bible

  • The Declaration of Independence
