Discover you strengths
  • NOW DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTHS
  • What does a strong life look like? What does it
look like when a person succeeds in building his
    life around strengths?
  • Warren Buffett-I am really no different from any
    of you.
  • Warren Buffetts strengths are Patient,
    Practical, and Trusting approach. Surprisingly
his strengths are not those that you might see in
a successful investor like urgency, a conceptual
mind and an innate skepticism about everyone's
motives. He has honed in on his strengths,
perfected them and stuck to it even when the
temptations to adopt a different strategy were
    tantalizingly sweet.
  • Warren Buffet is relevant here, not because of
his personal fortune but because he has figured
out something that can serve as a practical guide
for all of us. Look inside yourself, try to
identify your strongest threads, reinforce them
with practice and learning, and then either find
or, as he did, carve out a role that draws on
    these strengths every day.

4
My Strengths
  • RESPONSIBILITY - Ownership of what they say they
    will do
  • WOO - Love the challenge of meeting new people
    and winning them over.
  • ACHIEVER- Has a great deal of stamina and work
    hard
  • ARRANGER Can organize but also have the
    flexibility that complements this ability
  • HARMONY Dont enjoy conflictseek areas of
    agreement
  • Keeping all my
    balls up in the air!

5
Know your strengths Your Members
  • Identify your strengths your members (Ask them)
  • What do they like to do, What type of experience
    do they have
  • No two people are alike. We all bring our
    strengths to the group.
  • Put your teams strengths to work - Delegate

6
Different Volunteer Types
  • The Know it All
  • The Know It All may have a lot of knowledge.
You will want utilize that knowledge and/or
experience but also manage that person. Be
aware, this type of volunteer can intimidate
others. They are great planners and organizers.
  • The Talker
  • Talkers are friendly, highly motivated
individuals. They fit well into jobs that
involve working with people. They are excellent
on the telephone, giving directions, keeping
people moving and keeping morale high. They are
    good cheerleaders.

7
Different Volunteer Types
  • The Quiet Ones
  • The Quiet Ones are sometimes shy, may not
communicate well to a group of people or may be
uncomfortable working with people they dont
know. They may be good with solitary
    assignments.
  • The Griper
  • Volunteers of this nature can be destructive to
your project and to the morale and spirit of the
rest of the group. These folks have pet peeves
or may have an axe to grind.
  • The Controller
  • Controllers can be very useful to a program as
they are very organized. Be aware they may try to
control the situation they have to be in charge
of things. They might try to tell you how they
would run the project or who should or
shouldnt be allowed to participate. Use tact
and patience with controllers. Remember, they
mean well, so try to turn their negative
influence into positive results. Since this is a
volunteer group, youll need everyones support.

Corporate Volunteerism _at_ Qwest
  • For Qwest people, volunteering is second nature.
    Whether we're mentoring at-risk students,
delivering meals to elderly shut-ins, encouraging
cancer patients or officiating Beep Baseball
games, we're living up to our Spirit of Service
heritage by making a real difference in our
communities. As Pioneers your leadership will
inspire and enable others to enhance our
neighbors' quality of life and to make a
significant contribution to the vitality of
    communities.

10
How to survive
  • For the pioneers to survive we are going to have
to shift our expectations of our Volunteers.
  • One Shot deals with flexibility
  • Include Family and Friends
  • As Nancy Jo Houk mentioned yesterday
  • Its also become increasingly important to
people that when they volunteer they feel like
theyre part of a community of volunteers who
will leave a legacy. Again, the Pioneers are
leaps and bounds ahead of other volunteer
organizations in this regard, with our
    grass-roots, local community approach.
