Larcenies and Breaking Entering
  • Two prevalent crimes on campus are larcenies and
    breaking and entering into residences and motor
    vehicles
  • Larceny- The crime of opportunity, the unlawful
    taking away of property from the possession of
    another
  • Breaking and Entering- The unlawful entry into a
    building or other structure with the intent to
    commit a theft

  • Keep your car in good running condition
  • Do not leave valuables such as phone, CDs, or
    wallet on the seat of the car. Instead, lock them
    in trunk or glove compartment.

  • Do not leave your personal items unattended
    especially in public places, such as the LIBRARY,
    Campus Center or Cafeteria!
  • Do not leave valuables such as money, credit
    cards, jewelry, computers in unsecured places.
  • Do not leave messages on the door of your room,
    apartment or on your answering machine telling
    people that you are away.

Driving a Motor Vehicle in the United States
  • An International Student may legally drive on the
    roads of the Commonwealth (State) of
    Massachusetts on his or her own home countrys
    valid drivers license for up to one year from
    DATE of ARRIVAL to the US. The international
    driver must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Verify if your license is recognized in the
    United States at the Registry of Motor Vehicles
    web site www.mass.gov/rmv/
  • A Licensed Driver from another country should
    consider obtaining and carrying, IN ADDITION to
    their license from their home country an
    international driving permit. Permits are
    available for a fee from various automobile
    associations.
  • An International Driving Permit does not confer
    Driving Privileges but is a supporting document
    to the home country license. If this is all you
    have on you when youre pulled over by the
    police, you will be considered unlicensed. C90-10
    arrestable
  • You may apply for and receive a Massachusetts
    Drivers License by passing a written test and
    road test with the Massachusetts Registry of
    Motor Vehicles.

  • A Police Officer may stop a Motor Vehicle, for
    any of the following reasons, if they observe a
    violation of law
  • Speeding (remember miles per hour not meters!)
  • Failure to stop at a Stop Sign or Red Light
  • Failure to Stay within Marked Lanes on a Road
  • Failure to use proper turn signals when turning
    or changing lanes
  • Failure to display valid license plates or valid
    inspection stickers on vehicle
  • An unsafe or defective motor vehicle. For example
    headlight (front) or tail (back )light out
  • Loud Exhaust/Muffler

  • How will I know if a Police Officer wants me to
    stop my vehicle?
  • A Police Officer standing in the road or on the
    roadside in front of you will signal by hand
    motion that you should stop or pull over to the
    roadside and stop
  • A Police Officer driving a marked police vehicle
    will follow directly behind your vehicle and use
    flashing lights and/or a siren to get your
    attention. The Officer may also use a
    loudspeaker. If you are followed by a police
    vehicle with flashing lights, pull over to the
    right side of the road as quickly and as safely
    as you can.

  • If you are stopped by a Police Officer while
    driving
  • Do not get out of the vehicle unless instructed
    to do so by the Officer
  • Keep your hands visible
  • Give the Officer the Vehicle Registration and
    your drivers license if asked.
  • You may be asked to sign your name in the
    presence of the officer.
  • If you receive a citation or ticket you may go to
    the Department of Public Safety and ask for their
    advice.

  • Never drive a motor vehicle after drinking
    alcoholic beverages
  • Always use your seat belt it is the law in
    Massachusetts.
  • Observe the Speed Limit (MPH not Meters!)
  • Slow down when driving in snow, ice, rain or fog
  • Know and obey traffic signals and signs

What is a Hate Crime
  • A hate crime is a criminal offense committed
    against persons property or society that is
    motivated in whole or in part by an offenders
    bias against an individuals or a groups race,
    religion, ethnic or national origin, gender, age,
    disability, or sexual orientation.

Hate Incident versus Hate Crime
  • Hate incident
  • The behaviors, that though motivated by bias
    against a victims race, religion, ethnic or
    national origin, gender, age, disability, or
    sexual orientation, are not criminal acts
  • Hate Crime
  • The behaviors become crimes only when they
    directly incite perpetrators to commit violence
    against persons or property, or if they place a
    potential victim in reasonable fear of their
    safety.

  • Hate related crimes and incidents are not
    tolerated at UMass Dartmouth and are thoroughly
    investigated by the University Police

Consular Notification
  • Mandatory Notification if arrested
  • Statement for Foreign National from list
    countries
  • Because of your nationality, we are required
    to notify your countrys consular officers here
    in the U.S. We will do this as soon as possible.
    In addition, you are entitled to communicate with
    your consular officers. You are not required to
    accept their assistance, but your consular
    officers may be able to help you obtain legal
    representation, and may contact your family and
    visit you in detention, among other things.

  • Non-Mandatory Notification
  • Statement
  • As a non-U.S. citizen who is being arrested or
    detained, you are entitled to have us notify your
    countrys consular officers here in the U.S. of
    your situation. You are also entitled to
    communicate with your consular officers. A
    consular officer may be able to help you obtain
    legal representation, and may contact your family
    and visit you in detention, among other things.
    If you want us to notify your consular officers,
    you can request this notification at any time.
