1
Why, you reckon?
  • Author Langston Hughes
  • Robert Nichols and Tyler Brinker

2
Basic overview
  • The story was about a black man that was
encountered by fellow poor black men. The men
proposed a proposition to the main character.
The main character was extremely hungry. Like
the main character the black men were too. The
proposition was for the main character and the
black men to knap the next rich white man and
take his money so they could eat. The motive was
that the rich white people have no care for the
poor. The black men wanted to get even and eat.
The men take the white guy down to a basement
where they interrogated the man. The black men
took the mans money and his clothing. The main
character is left with nothing as the black men
take off. Surprised that the white man thought
it was fun and was not mad at all.

3
The Title
  • The story was about uneducated blacks assuming
that rich white people are happy. But money does
not buy happiness. Hence the why you reckon they
    aint happy in the story.

4
Story format
  • The story was written in the form of a
conversation between the main character and
another man. The man must have been an authority
figure because the story starts out in saying,
Well, sir, I aint never been mixed up in
    nothin wrong before nor since.

5
Themes
  • The major theme

minded character to one that was more informed
about the way rich carry themselves even though
he accomplished nothing in robbing him.

8
Authors main point
  • The authors main point was to enlighten the
reader that people are not always what we
