Connecting to resources from outside of the
library
  • NUcat is accessible from any location without a
    netid and password
  • Research databases require a netid and password.
    You will automatically be prompted through the
    librarys EZProxy system as you log into a
    database.
  • More information is available at
    http//www.library.northwestern.edu/help/proxy/

Finding books
  • Use NUcat, the library catalog, to find books,
    journals by title, sound recordings, films,
    government publications and other documents.
  • Searches can be done by title, author, keyword,
    subject, and many other ways.

Keyword search tips for article searching pt. 1
  • Use connectors, proximity operators, and/or
    truncation to broaden or narrow your
    search--symbols and commands used vary from
    database to database.
  • Connectors a.k.a. Boolean Operators
  • and toyota and ford
  • or sports utility vehicle or SUV
  • not java not coffee
  • Proximity Operators
  • w/x software w/3 license (within 3
    words of each other)
  • w/s oil w/s refinery (within the
    same sentence)
  • Truncation
  • ? telecom? (finds telecom,
    telecommunications, etc.)
  • market (finds market,
    marketing, etc.)

Keyword search tips for article searching pt. 2
  • Depending on the database, you may need to use
    around a phrase to indicate that you want to
    search it as a phrase and not as separate words.
  • sports utility vehicle
  • Use parentheses ( ) to indicate what part of a
    search is to be read as one distinct concept.
  • (sports utility vehicle or SUV) and (market w/2
    strateg?)
  • Keywords may be searched in the title field,
    author field, subject field, full text field,
    etc. Most often, the default is to the fields
    other than full text.
