Title: CRA Overview

1
CRA Overview
  • Laura Ann Nicolai, MPH
  • Division Epidemiologist
  • Division of Immunization, VDH
  • laura.nicolai_at_vdh.virginia.gov

2
Background
  • In the event of an influenza pandemic, timely and
complete reporting of pandemic influenza vaccine
doses administered will allow the Federal
Government and States to closely monitor the use
    of scarce vaccine resources.
  • To accomplish this, states will track vaccine
doses administered and collect minimum data
elements for weekly transmission to CDC
  • Virginia will utilize CDCs Countermeasure
Response Administration (CRA) system to meet this
    requirement

3
About CRA
  • Web-based application that tracks patients and
the countermeasures they receive during a public
    health event
  • Allows states to
  • Create and manage multiple events simultaneously
  • Track single and multiple dose dispensing
    countermeasures
  • Streamline date entry capabilities by collecting
    patient and/or aggregate treatment information
  • Provides data extracts for state reporting
  • Allows for off-line deployment at points of
    dispensing

4
Testing CRA Using Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Data
as a Proxy
  • Objective is to test the infrastructure for
    reporting aggregate counts using seasonal
    influenza data
  • Regular reporting of influenza doses only
    required during pandemic
  • Reporting of seasonal influenza vaccine is for
    testing purposes only
  • Goal is to conduct exercise with minimally
    invasive impact to normal operations

5
Testing of CRA Reporting In VA
  • Voluntary participation from Districts
  • Free influenza vaccine provided to participating
    Districts
  • Districts must then record all doses administered
    data in CRA
  • Participation throughout Commonwealth with 18
    Districts requesting 10,000 doses

6
Use of CRA for Reporting
  • Healthcare provider collects patient level
    information locally using CRA
  • CRA automatically calculates counts from patient
    level data entered
  • CRA can collect detailed individuals level
information is addition to core data elements
additional elements are for VDH use only

7
Technical Considerations
  • Staff entering data on-line must have internet
    access
  • Staff accessing CRA must have a digital
certificate loaded onto the computer they will
    use during vaccination clinic

8
Required Data
  • Age
  • Project Area ID
  • Date of Clinic

Time Frame
  • Clinic sessions should occur between November 1
    and December 31, 2007
  • Data from each clinic should be compiled and
transmitted within 48 hours of the clinic session

13
Expected Benefits
  • Illustrate technical gaps and needs
  • Identify operational barriers
  • Understand training needs of staff
  • Identify equipment needs and capabilities
  • Gain a preliminary understanding of impact to
    clinic operations

14
Challenges
  • Availability and distribution of seasonal vaccine
  • Data entry staffing, training, and equipment needs
