Title: DYNAMITE

1
DYNAMITE
2
Objective to compare the water quality and
health between the water bodies in Centennial
Woods and the Winooski River in order to compare
them to ideal water quality.
3
Research Methods
  • We found our results the following ways
  • Using chemical test kits to determine pH,
    conductivity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen
    levels.
  • Identifying organisms in the stream to determine
pollution levels and quality of the stream.

4
Results of Stream Testing
  • Chemistry
  • The levels of pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity,
and temperature changed slightly between sites
    and streams.
  • By comparing the stream levels to the levels of
an ideal stream, we conclude that the streams
tested are very close to being healthy.
  • Biology
  • Organisms present were consistent in sites from
    the same streams
  • The types of organisms present in both streams
show that the water is somewhat polluted.

INTRODUCTION to Tree Carbon and Soil
Group Objectives To discover whether the type
of soil affects the amount of CO2 that a tree can
store. To compare the amount of CO2 that trees
can store to the amount of CO2 that
transportations emit.
  • Add maps here! ?

6
Research Methods
Trees
Soils
We measured tree circumferences and calculated
the DBH and identified tree species Determined
CO2 storage in the plots and total
forest Compared to transportation emissions in
Burlington
We studied soil samples that measured up to 35
cm Next we determined the color, pH, and texture
of the soil horizon samples
7
Results of Tree and Soil Samples
  • Results
  • We suggest that the similarity in soils
influenced the forest composition of trees, and
therefore similar tree species were found within
    our samples.
  • We estimate that the total amount of CO2 emitted
by cars in the Burlington region equals
    374,400,000 lbs/year.
  • We estimate that the trees of Centennial Woods
    store 70,840,000 lbs of CO2.

Thank you to all the teachers for helping us and
putting fun in education. This week has been
great and we hope that all the knowledge that we
gathered will be useful for our futures. We
enjoyed all the electives and trips to different
places. We are really grateful that we learned
from these amazing teachers. We like to have a
special thanks to Christine Massey for being the
director of this amazing program. In addition,
we would like to send out a special thanks out to
Carey, David, and Jo. Thank you guys for teaching
us about the chemistry and biology of soil,
leaves, trees, and streams. We are very
appreciative that we got to work with you and
that you dropped what you were doing in your life
and gave us a week of fun and Learning. Thank
you, Group Dynamite
