GreenlandAugust 1990
  • Tim Miller and Bob Morse meet Bruce Koci
  • Bruce is living in a pup-tent next to 250 meter
    hole. In Bruce fashion tent is at -50C, outside
    is at -25C
  • We install a 3 string PMT system to depths of 250
    meters. We establish muons within the hour
  • Butyl Acetate adventure---the blue PMTs

South Pole1992-93, 1st try

  • Two holes, Berkeley string to 800 meters
  • 2nd hole, we stuck Bucky-I at 400 meters.
  • UW/UCI string of 4 OMs to 400 meters on Bobs
    anniversary. Jan 17th. Francis to the rescue with
    flowers for Pat in Madison

South Pole 93-94 AMANDA-A
  • 4 strings to 800-1000 meters, 20 OMs/string using
    coaxial cables (slow and lossy!)
  • Hot-tubs, Thanksgiving at Pole
  • Swedish Drill Team (1st appearance)
  • Disasterbubbly ice, no absorption, but lots of
    scattering.
  • Why clathrites, they are supposed to vanish at
    800 meters.

South Pole 95-96, AMANDA B-4
  • 4 holes to 1500-2000 meters. Bubbles gone at 1350
    meters according to Buford Price
  • Coax cables used, 20 OMs/string. 1st AMANDA
    success. Signals are sharp, not diffuse as in
    AMANDA-A.
  • AMANDA-A turned into a calorimeter
  • AMANDA B-4 now allows serious analysis
  • Dust or do we change the speed of light?

    better signals by factor of 4.

    meters for possible ICECUBE proposal
  • George Cameron PICO-Nebraska team leader
  • Drilling to 2400 meters dramatically informs us
    that we need a more powerful drill.
  • Strings 11-13 problematical, shut-downs, etc

Final Season 99-00, AMANDA-II
  • 6 strings installed between 1500-2000 meters
  • String-17 gets stuck at 1500 meters.
  • Stick drill in hole 19 at 600 meters (Bruce at
    Kilimanjaro). Karl Kuivinen and Walt Hancock.
  • Drill hole 19-A with 2nd drill. We could have
    deployed a Volkswagon in this hole
  • We declare success and go home.
