Cerritos Alpha Log on Procedure
  • Click on the Terminal Icon
  • Eagle Secure Gateway.
  • Cerritos College AlphaServer 2100A 5/250
    (Alpha1), VMS V6.2-1H2
  • Username USERNAME
  • Password
  • When you enter your password, the characters will
    not be displayed
  • User ID consists of 5 letters (from your last
    name) and 3 numbers
  • Your initial password will need to be changed

Password Security
  • Do not give your password to anyone
  • The first time you log into the Alpha system you
    will be required to change your password.
  • Passwords are a minimum of six characters and a
    maximum of 32 characters
  • Passwords cannot have imbedded spaces
  • Avoid names or words that can be readily
    associated with you

Changing your password
  • Your initial password must be changed using the
    following steps
  • You will be required to enter your old (initial)
    password
  • You will be asked to enter a new password twice
  • The passwords you enter will not display on your
    screen
  • Old Password (enter your old password)
  • New Password (enter your new password)
  • Verification (enter your new
    password again)

Email (Electronic Mail)
  • Type EMAIL at the prompt
  • EMAIL will respond with the EMAIL prompt
  • Help is available by typing HELP at the EMAIL
    prompt
  • EMAILHELP
  • EMAILHELP SEND
  • EMAILHELP any command

  • At the EMAIL prompt you may enter the
    following commands
  • SEND
  • READ
  • REPLY
  • FORWARD
  • DIRECTORY

  • DELETE
  • MOVE folder_name
  • SELECT folder_name

Information about folders
  • Electronic mail messages are stored in folders.
  • There are three (3) default folders
  • NEWMAIL (Incoming unread mail)
  • MAIL (Old, previously read
    mail)
  • WASTEBASKET (Deleted mail)
  • How to create new folders
  • when reading a message, MOVE the message to a
    folder
  • EMAILMOVE folder_name

SEND command
  • SEND
  • (Create your message)
  • SEND filename.ext
  • (Send a file as your message)
  • SEND/EDIT filename.ext
  • (use editor, begin with the contents of a file)
  • EMAILSEND
  • TO (Enter the username(s) of persons)
  • CC (Enter your user id and persons to CC)
  • SUBJECT (Enter a subject or title for the
    message)
  • Use Ctrl-Z to exit the editor and send your
    message

Reading Messages - Related Commands
  • RETURN or ENTER key (Reads next message)
  • READ 5 (reads 5th message in
    current folder)
  • 5 (reads 5th message in
    current folder)
  • READ/EDIT 5 (read 5th message using the
    editor)
  • READ MAIL (change to MAIL folder, read
    1st message)
  • NEXT (read next message)
  • BACK (read previous message)
  • CURRENT (re-read current message from
    beginning)

REPLY Command
  • You must be reading a message to initiate a
    REPLY.
  • Reply dialog does not ask for TO but will ask
    for CC
  • REPLY
  • reply to the current message
  • REPLY/EXTRACT
  • include current message in reply
  • REPLY filename.ext
  • use filename.ext as reply message

FORWARD Command
  • You must be reading a message in order to use
    FORWARD
  • acts much like the SEND command
  • FORWARD
  • forward the current message
  • FORWARD/EDIT
  • uses editor to add a note to the message

DIRECTORY Command
  • The DIRECTORY command changes the current
    selection set
  • DIR
  • directory of current folder
  • DIR folder_name
  • list of messages in folder
  • DIR/NEW
  • directory of new messages
  • DIR/FROMusername
  • directory of messages from this user

EXTRACT Command
  • EXTRACT filename.ext
  • extracts the current message
  • EXTRACT/APPEND
  • appends to existing file
  • EXTRACT/ALL
  • extracts current selection set

DELETE Command
  • When you delete a message it is placed in the
    WASTEBASKET. Deleted messages can be un-deleted
    by SELECTing the WASTEBASKET folder and moving
    the messages to another folder.

  • delete messages 7, 12, and 25
  • DELETE 5-9
  • delete messages 5 through 9

PURGE Command
  • PURGE is to delete of messages in the
    wastebasket
  • An automatic purge is done when you exit EMAIL.
  • PURGE
  • empty the WASTEBASKET folder
