Why?
  • The Stamp Act
  • In 1775 the English passed this act where all
    printed material like newspapers, pamphlets,
licenses, or a deck of cards were taxed. It was
the first time in 150 years that the colonists
    were directly taxed by England.
  • The Tea Act
  • The British also put a tax on tea. The colonists
had to buy the tea from the British companies.
  • The colonists got mad and on December 16, 1773 a
group of colonists dressed up like Mohawk Indians
and dumped a ship full of tea into the water.
The King got mad and told the colonists that they
had to pay for the tea. The patriots refused.
  • The colonists were getting frustrated because the
British were not treating them the same as they
were the people who lived in England. They
didnt get to vote or make any decisions, but
they still had to pay taxes to the King of
    England.
  • Their cry was NO TAXATION WITHOUT
    REPRESENTATION.
