Shake the pollen grains onto a glass slide and
add a few drops of dilute sugar solution before
observing under a microscope. The sugar solution
encourages the growth of the pollen tube and
the germ tube, germ pore and the nuclei inside
can be observed under magnification. The pollen
grains may burst if water alone is used instead
of the dilute sugar solution.
