The terrain of Greece
  • Greece covers about 82,000 square miles, about
    the size of England.
  • With 3054 islands, and a jagged shoreline,
Greeces coastline runs about 9320 miles.
  • Italy is much larger than Greece, covering about
187,000 square miles, but Italys coastline is
    only 5400 miles.
  • Greece is mountainous and has 20 peaks over 6500
    feet.

An Old Greek Legend
  • When god created the earth, he used a sieve to
distribute the good soil everywhere, keeping back
the stones in the sieve. He then threw the stones
over his shoulder and created Greece.
  • (Friedrich Sauerwein in Sparkes Greek
    Civilization, 3)

The hyphen between East West
  • West of Asia Minor
  • North of Egypt North Africa
  • East of Italy
  • Greece, though claimed by Europe, is the hyphen
    between East and West.

10
Weather forecast?
  • Greece is semi-arid, although the climate varies
    from region to region.
  • Summers are generally hot and dry, while winters
    are cool and wet.
  • Drought floods made farming difficult, but
    people farmed and survived.
  • (from Pomeroy Ancient Greece)

11
Sauerwein suggests 3 seasons
  • Season of flowering and ripening (March-June)
  • Dry Season (June-October)
  • Wet Season (October-March)

12
Whats for lunch?
  • Mediterranean triad
  • Grain
  • Grapes
  • Olives
  • (photo of olive tree by Sandra Jackson)
  • (triad from Pomeroy)

13
Still hungry?
  • Bread, wine, and olive oil were the staples of
    the Greek diet.
  • Vegetables, nuts, and fruits, along with goats
and sheeps-milk cheeses rounded out the diet.
  • Most Greeks ate little meat.
  • Honey was used for sweetening, and water and wine
    were the drinks of choice.

14
Rugged Terrain
  • People made and still make cheese from the milk
of sheep and goats and make clothing from their
    wool.
  • Goats and sheep still graze in the Greek
    countryside.
  • Sheep and goats (and donkeys) can go where a car
    or truck cannot.

The way the
Greeks saw it
19
Ancient Greece was not unified
  • Plato wrote I believe that the earth is very
large and that we who dwell between the pillars
of Hercules and the river Phasis live in a small
part of it above the sea, like ants or frogs
    around a pond (Phaedo 109).
