Setting

• The characters in the book go to many different
  places, but most of the action in the stories
  take place in Westchester County, New York. The
  girls go to school at Octavian Country Day
  School, which is an private all-girls school.
  Other incidents occur at the Briarwood Academy
  (the boys school), at many of the characters
  houses, and also the Westchester mall.

Theme

• I think the theme of The Clique is that what
  goes around comes around.

Characters

• Massie Block- The leading member of her group of
  friends. Theyre known as the Pretty Committee.
  A gorgeous brunette with shiny hair, golden eyes
  and a glacier-white smile.
• Claire Lyons- She moved from Florida to
  Westchester, New York. Her dad was good friends
  with Massie's dad. Her family moved into Massies
  guest house until they can find a house of their
  own. Theyre not rich unlike the other girls.
  She also has a very hard time fitting in.
• Dylan Marvil- Shes the Pretty Committee's source
  to the famous world. Her mother is famous talk
  show host for a television show called The Daily
  Grind. Her trademarks are her fiery red hair,
  bright colors, and her obsession with her weight.
• Alicia Rivera- Shes the beauty of the Pretty
  Committee and also Massies Beta. The Briarwood
  Boys consider her to be extremely hot, and she
  has a reputation as being the prettiest girl at
  OCD. She has glossy dark hair and big brown eyes.
• Kristen Gregory-Kristen Gregory is an all-star
  soccer player at school. However, she is by no
  means a tomboy. She is a fan of designer clothes,
  but she cannot afford them Kristen is highly
  intelligent. Has long blond hair. Her trademarks
  are playing word games, being athletic and
  avoiding being caught by her parents.

• Jay Judy Lyons- Claire Lyons's overprotective
  parents. Jay is old college friends with William
  Block and that is how they live in their guest
  house.
• Kendra William Block- Massie's very wealthy
  parents.
• Todd Lyons- Claires little brother. He is in 5th
  Grade, is 10 years old, and is described as
  having red hair and freckles.
• Layne Abeley- She is an outsider who dresses
  strange. Layne is seen as a loser by everyone in
  the Clique except Claire. Layne had a
  friendship with Massie Block who pretended to
  be her friend to get closer to Laynes brother
  Chris.
• Chris Abeley- Layne Abeleys fifteen year-old
  hot brother. Massie has a huge crush on him,
  but left him when she found out he has a
  girlfriend, Fawn.

Plot

• Massie Block believes her life is perfect and
  she is the head of everything, but then her
  father's college friend, Jay Lyons, moves into
  their guest house with his family (Claire, Todd,
  and Judy) while theyre looking for a house to
  live in.
• The next day is the first day of seventh grade
  for Claire, Massie, and the rest of the Pretty
  Committee. Massie always drives her friends to
  school with them, and Claire is dumped in the
  backseat. While she is in the back, Claire is
  first being ignored, then being made fun of by
  Massie and her friends.
• The school day doesn't get much better when
  Alicia purposely dumps red paint on Claire's
  pants during art class forcing Claire to go to
  the lost found. The others (Alicia, Dylan, and
  Kristen) are mean to her because Massie doesn't
  like her, so they all treat her cruelly. One day
  Claire gets so fed up with them that she sneaks
  into Massie's room every day when she's walking
  her dog Bean and pretends to be Massie on IM.
  She convinces Alicia that Massie thinks Claire is
  cool.

Plot 2

• Later Massie uncovers the truth and gets Claire
  to confess to some embarrassing things she said
  about the girls in a five-way phone-call. By the
  end of the book, Massie's alpha status is back up
  and Massie finds herself having mixed feelings
  about Claire, like whether she is in or out,
  according to the in and out lists Massie creates!

Point of View

• The story is told in 3RD person.

Conflict

• Internal Conflict Claire has no friends
  besides Layne, and is trying to fit in.
• External The Pretty Committee clique (Massie,
  Dylan, Alicia, and Kristen) ignore her, make fun
  of her, pour red paint on the back of her pants
  and just pretty much makes her life bad when
  shes only trying to fit in.

Climax

• The climax of this book is the girl named Claire.
  There's a "clique" by Massie, Dylan, Alicia, and
  Kristen. Massie tries to make Claire go back to
  her home by making her miserable in the guest
  house while Claire tries to adjust and make
  friends, which she only makes one (Layne.)

Resolution

• Claire sneaks into Massie's room and pretends to
  be her on IM. Alicia Kristen and Dylan are mad
  because Claire is saying mean things. They of
  course think it is Massie doing this and kick her
  out of the pretty committee- their clique. Massie
  tells Kristen that she never did anything and she
  realizes that Claire is the one who got on her
  IM. Claire is then out of the clique and she
  continues to be friends with Layne and apologizes
  for ditching her. Massie then makes her State of
  the Union on her computer and she says that
  Claire is out, and that Claire is also in, having
  mixed fillings about her.
