Lewisville Public School on College Street housed
all grades until 1949.

1942

• Mr. J.K. DeLay was hired as Superintendent of
  the Lewisville Independent School District. He
  served in this capacity until his retirement in
  1966.

1949
Lewisville High School, now DeLay Middle School,
opened in 1949 and remained at this location
until the present campus opened in 1968.

1952
Leah Kirkpatrick, a history teacher, served as
the high school librarian.

Schools -- 1950s

• Central Elementary School (1957)

Central opened in 1957 and housed both elementary
and junior high school students until Lewisville
Middle School (now DeLay) opened in 1968.

1961

• Joella Orr, a certified librarian, was hired.
  She set up libraries at Central, College Street,
  and Lakeland. These libraries were the first
  elementary school libraries established in Denton
  County. Mrs. Orr left L.I.S.D. in 1968.

1966

• Mr. Carl Craighead was hired as Superintendent
  of the Lewisville Independent School District
  following the retirement of Mr. J.K. DeLay.

Venita Lukens, a journalism teacher, served as
librarian at Lewisville High School.

Ophelia Sparks, a certified librarian, came to
Lewisville High School. She retired in 1978.

1969

• Mr. Leo Stuver was hired as Superintendent of
  the Lewisville Independent School District. He
  served in this capacity until his retirement in
  1981. During his administration, he hired
  library aides to run the districts elementary
  libraries.

• Mary Maxwell became Coordinator of Elementary
  Libraries.

1981

• Dr. V.M. Burkett was hired as Superintendent
  of the Lewisville Independent School District
  following the retirement of Mr. Leo Stuver.

1983

• Jackie Irby was the first certified elementary
  school librarian hired by L.I.S.D. since the
  1960s. She served as the librarian at Peters
  Colony Elementary. The dictum from the school
  board and administration was that certified
  librarians would replace aides by attrition.

1984

• Dr. Clayton Downing was hired as
  Superintendent of the Lewisville Independent
  School District. He served as Superintendent
  until his retirement in 2001.

1986

• Jackie Irby became Coordinator of Elementary
  Libraries.

1986

• Librarians began monthly meetings.
• Jan Bennett, Director of Secondary Education,
  met with secondary librarians and served as a
  coordinator for secondary libraries.
• Jackie Irby, Elementary Library Coordinator,
  met with elementary librarians.

1989

• Automation of elementary school libraries began.
  The automation project began with the addition of
  circulation systems.

• Donald Elementary and Hebron Valley Elementary
  opened in 1989 with automated systems, and three
  to five campuses were added per year as funds
  were allocated.

• Catalog systems would follow at a later date.

• LRMS (Library Resource Management System) was
  selected as the automation program for all
  secondary libraries.

1992

• Secondary librarians began entering records
  into the new LRMS system using shelflist
  information.

1993

• Griffin Middle School was the first L.I.S.D.
  secondary school to use an automated circulation
  system. Librarian Wanda Baldridge opened the
  1993-94 school year using LRMS.

1994

• Part-time aides were hired for middle school
  libraries.

1995

• By 1995 all elementary libraries had automated
  circulation systems. The Follett system was
  selected for use in the elementary schools.

1995

• Jackie Irby, Elementary Library Coordinator,
  became Coordinator of Elementary and Secondary
  Libraries following the retirement of Jan Bennett.

1995

• Students began using the Internet in L.I.S.D.
  libraries.

1997

• Catalog systems were added at all elementary
  schools.
• Four middle schools switched from LRMS to Follett

• DeLay
• Forestwood
• Hedrick
• Arbor Creek

1998

• The Texas Library Connection (TLC) was an
  educational technology initiative of the Texas
  Education Agency.

• TLC provided a statewide database of library
  holdings which were used for interlibrary loan
  and record sharing.

• Participants were required to meet certain
  criteria to have full use of TLC resources.
  Funding was discontinued August 31, 2003, as a
  result of actions taken during the 78th
  Legislative Session.

1998

• L.I.S.D. librarians began using Folletts
  Titlewave to place on-line orders for books and
  audiovisual materials.

• Dr. Jerry Roy was hired as Superintendent of the
  Lewisville Independent School District following
  the retirement of Dr. Clayton Downing.

2003

• A new Librarian Evaluation Form was used to
  evaluate all librarians. The form was created by
  a committee of L.I.S.D. librarians during the
  2001-02 school year and approved by the School
  Board the following summer.

2004

• Marilyn Beaird became Library Coordinator
  following the retirement of Jackie Irby in
  December 2003.

2004

• The L.I.S.D. Librarians Handbook was revised
  by a committee of librarians and placed on-line.
  Librarians may access the handbook by going to
  the districts Intranet and clicking on the
  Library link.
