Is it enough?
  • Federal Stimulus Package
  • IDEA Title I 700,000
  • Can it be used to supplant?
  • Is the amount 700,000?
  • Construction stimulus, energy bond
  • Fix rooms at Wilson (lockers), Monroe
  • Flex
  • Contingency Plans
  • Some ideas on reductions through grants, but will
    need your help

10
Ideas
  • 1. Class size disparity among elem. schools
    18-32
  • (3 large schools 3 smaller shools)
  • 10-12 choice students moved from next yrs 4th
gr. at Monroe -- move as a group to Garf. so they
    have friends
  • Limit choice
  • Reduction in all students due to economy moving
  • Reduction in choice due to economy driving

11
More ideas
  • 2. Combine McKinley Monroe
  • McKinley is the smallest neighborhood school
Monroe is the 2nd smallest neighborhood school
  • Monroe students too isolated to be redistricted
  • Most McKinley parents drive their children
  • Vicki Wilson, Principal combine staff, prof.
    dev., etc.
  • Create a transition team to work out program for
    fall
  • No plans for McKinley yet

12
Class Size Projections, gr. 1-5, next year
  • Without merger class size averages
  • Garfield 23.3
  • Jefferson 26.8
  • McKinley 23.6
  • Monroe 20.9
  • Taft 25
  • Washington 27
  • With merger
  • Monroe (with McKinley) 25.6

13
More ideas
  • 3. Move 6th grade to Wilson
  • Academic fit
  • Curriculum, co-teaching, specials, opportunities,
    collaboration
  • Physical fit (more than enough room!)
  • Separate, more activities, entrance, lunch, drop
off, relocate County sp. ed. classes from Wilson
    to elementary schools
  • Developmentally appropriate fit
  • Transition team
  • 6th grade teachers have 1st choice on transfers

14
Conclusions
  • Restructure district by fall, K-5 and 6-8
  • Merge 2 smallest schools by fall
  • Significant savings for district and no decrease
    in program for students
  • Decrease staff through attrition (5 retirements
this year) few layoffs (approx. 3 teachers)

15
Staff impact
  • Minimum layoff of 3-4 teachers
  • Layoff of 1 secretary
  • Layoff of 1.5 maintenance
  • Lunch aides, food service, instructional aides,
media tech. and K will probably be
    reassigned
  • PS Additional retirements will reduce these
    numbers.

16
What if . . .
  • . . . Teachers dont retire (with MEA plan in the
    background . . .)?
  • . . . We cant balance the budget?

17
Help!
  • I need your support . . .
  • On right-sizing the District
  • On merger of McKinley Monroe
  • On integrating 6th grade into Wilson
  • On helping everyone understand and buy-in
  • Not fighting for your turf, but for our south
    end
  • And your ideas . . . and your trust
  • . . . And my thanks!
