TOBACCO FACTS
  • Smoking is the 1 preventable cause of death and
    disease.
  • Smoking causes about 400,000 deaths a year
  • Heart Disease is the 1 cause of death, followed
by lung cancer, emphysema and high blood pressure.

2
  • The risk of becoming addicted to nicotine is
between 1-3. The risk of becoming dependent on
    alcohol is 1 in 9.
  • Each cigarette smoked takes about 7 minutes off
    your life. 140 min 1 pack 2 years 20
    years of smoking
  • Smoking cost 97 billion a year in medical costs

3
INGREDIENTS
  • The 3 main harmful substances in tobacco are
  • nicotine,
  • tar
  • carbon monoxide.

4
Nicotine
  • Nicotine is an addictive drug that is classified
    as a stimulant.
  • Nicotine is more addictive than heroin or
    cocaine.
  • Within seconds of inhaling, nicotine affects
    breathing.
  • Nicotine is a natural chemical produced to act as
an insecticide to protect the tobacco plant from
    insects.

5
TAR
  • Tar is the dark, sticky substance that forms when
    tobacco burns.
  • Tar contains many chemicals that can cause
    cancer.
  • Tar covers the lining of the lungs, and damages
    the respiratory system.

6
CARBON MONOXIDE
  • Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless,
poisonous gas produced when tobacco burns.
  • Carbon Monoxide clings onto red blood cells in
place of oxygen. When this happens the red blood
cells can not transport as much oxygen as the
    body needs.

7
Some other chemicals in tobacco
  • Acetone found in finger nail polish
  • Formaldehyde found in embalming fluid
  • Arsenic found in weed killer
  • Propane used to light gas grills
  • Butane found in cigarette lighters

8
MAJOR SHORT TERM EFFECTS
  • Increase heart rate, increased blood pressure,
dulled taste buds, and changes in the brain that
    lead to addiction.
  • Long term health effects are
  • heart disease, emphysema, lung cancer, throat
cancer, bronchitis, and oh yeah - DEATH

9
Smokeless Tobacco
  • Smokeless tobacco, also known as chew, dip and
snuff, contains more nicotine than cigarettes.
  • Addiction occurs quicker than it does to
cigarettes. Use of smokeless tobacco increases
the risk of mouth cancer and cancer of the
    esophagus.
  • Ingredients include sugar 28 cancer causing
    chemicals

10
Cigars
  • Cigars contain nicotine and cancer causing
    chemicals like cigarettes.
  • 1 cigar 3 cigarettes
  • Cigars do not have a filter to reduce tar and
    nicotine intake

11
Cigarette Advertising and teens
  • Tobacco companies spend 11 billion a year on
advertising, more money than is spent on any
    other product on the market.
  • Everyday 3,000 teenagers become smokers.
  • Research shows that cigarette advertising has a
great influence on the behavior of teens.

12

    are Marlboro, Camels and Newport.

    were 18.

15
Poetic Justice
  • The Marlboro Man died of lung cancer

16
The bottom line
  • Smoking is a hard habit to break
  • The best idea is to not start at all.

    the lowest grades.
  • Tobacco use is highest among drop outs, lowest
    among college students.

20
Second Hand Smoke
  • Second hand smoke consists of
  • Mainstream smoke this is the smoke inhaled and
    exhaled by the smoker
  • Side stream smoke which is the smoke released
directly from the end of a burning cigarette

21
  • 2/3 of the smoke from a burning cigarette is not
inhaled by the smoker, it goes into the air.
  • Side stream smoke has a high concentration of
    toxic chemicals

22
  • Exposed to second hand smoke for as little as 8
minutes can cause physical reactions linked to
    heart disease
  • Second hand smoke can cause lung cancer in
    healthy nonsmokers
  • It takes about 2 weeks for nicotine to clear from
    the air in a room
