NJ State Mandate
  • The teaching of world language is mandated
    throughout the State of New Jersey in grades K-8.
  • Students are required by state mandate to
    demonstrate the knowledge and skills specified by
    the Core Curriculum Content Standards. Therefore,
    students at WAMS are placed into a sequential
    two-year language program.

Placement Process
  • Enrollment based on 5 Criteria
  • Average of 3 quarters of Language Arts
    grades
  • Pimsleur Language Aptitude Battery
  • Spring 08 MAP Reading scores
  • Spring 08 MAP Language Arts scores
  • Teacher checklist (Completed by 6th grade LA
    teacher)

Placement Process
  • Based on their individual scores, children are
    placed into one of two programs
  • French 1, Latin 1, Spanish 1, Part 1 and 2
    Program (complete the entire high school level 1
    curriculum over 7th and 8th grade)
  • Accelerated Spanish and French Program (complete
    French or Spanish 1 in grade 7 and French or
    Spanish 2 in grade 8)

  • Level 1 over a two-year span.
  • Appropriate pace for middle school students
  • All areas of modern language acquisition are
    stressed (reading, writing, speaking and
    listening comprehension). Vocabulary and
    grammatical explanations support language
    acquisition and production.
  • In classical languages, the study of grammar and
    vocabulary support translation skills. Students
    also study the derivations of English vocabulary
    in Latin.
  • Culture is an also integral component of each
    program.

  • Provides a challenging academic environment
  • Leads to the Honors/AP program at the high school
  • Highly attractive to the most competitive
    colleges
  • NOTE DUE TO THE GRAMMATCAL COMPLEXITY AND NATURE
    OF LATIN, THE Latin 1, PART 1 and 2 PROGRAM, IS
    IN ESSENCE AN ACCLERATED PROGRAM. STUDENTS IN THE
    LATIN PROGRAM HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENROLL IN
    TWO AP COURSES IN HIGH SCHOOL.

Moving Up a Level
  • Students who are identified by the world language
    teacher as having exceptional skills may be
    tested during the course of the year and move up
    a level.
  • Students who do not originally place into the
    program may test up a level by doing summer
    bridge work and testing.
  • Some students move up a level between seventh and
    eighth grade.

Moving Up a Level
  • Other students test after 3 Honors or 4 Honors.
  • Discussion with world language teacher and
    supervisor is crucial to assure best timing to
    accelerated the child.
  • Interested students should notify the teacher and
    supervisor and follow procedures outlined in the
    Program of Studies.
