Ronald Reagan
  • In 1976, former governor of California lost the
    Republican nomination for President to incumbent
    Gerald Ford.
  • Regan was originally a New Deal Democrat, but he
    said the party had left him, he didnt leave the
    party.
  • He helped Barry Goldwater in his run for
    President in 1964.
  • In 1966, Reagan was elected Governor of
    California.
  • He was reelected in 1970.

  • On the campaign trail, Reagan criticized the size
    of the Federal government and its intrusive
    nature on American business.
  • If it moves tax it. If it keeps moving regulate
    it. If it stops moving, subsidize it.

Reaganomics
  • Reagan vowed to reduce the size of the Federal
    government and Federal spending.
  • The goal was to encourage private investment.
  • He cut spending on social programs.
  • He cut taxes.
  • The goal was, if people had more money, they
    would save more money, so banks had money to
    lend, which would lead to more businesses, more
    jobs, and more productivity. This is know as
    supply side economics.

Defense Spending
  • President Reagan increased military spending.
  • Between 19811984 spending on defense almost
    doubled.
  • In 1983, the government began work on SDI,
    Strategic Defense Initiative, aka, Star Wars.
  • The Soviet Union tried to keep pace with
    increased U.S. military spending.
  • The Soviet command economy prevented the nation
    from increasing the production of both military
    and consumer goods.
  • At the height of the 1980s defense spending, the
    U.S. was spending 10 of GDP on military, the
    Soviets 67!

Deregulation
  • President Reagan also began the process of
    deregulation.
  • He removed price controls on oil, eliminated
    federal health and safety inspections on nursing
    homes, deregulated the airline industry,
    deregulated savings and loan industry.
  • The result, lower prices and increased
    competition.

The Nation at Risk
  • In 1983, Federal Report The Nation at Risk
    revealed the U.S. students lagged behind students
    in most other developed nations.
  • It also stated that 23 million Americans were
    unable to follow an instruction manual or fill
    out a job application.
  • The commission recommended more homework, longer
    school days, and a longer school year.
  • They also recommended a greater emphasis on the
    core classes (English, science, social studies,
    math, and computers)
  • In April 1991, President Bush announced his plan
    for American schools, which involved school
    choice.

The Election of 1984
  • With the economy extremely strong, Reagan and
    Bush easily won re-election.
  • They won every state except Mondales home state
    of Minnesota.

The Election of 1988
  • Most Americans were doing well economically and
    saw little reason to change.
  • It was the lowest voter turn out in 64 years.
  • George H.W. Bush easily won the White House.

The Election of 1992
  • With the economy in a recession and President
    Bushs breaking of his pledge of No new taxes,
    he lost the support of many Republicans.
  • Moderates voted Ross Perot.

The Supreme Court
  • With 12 years of Republican Presidents, the
    composition of the Supreme Court moved to the
    right as Conservative judges were appointed to
    the bench.
  • With the Conservative swing, many liberal
    decisions were over turned.
  • Although, the most controversial decision of the
    Warren Court, Roe v. Wade, has not been reargued
    much to the the dismay of conservatives.
