This picture portrays the loneliness of a
soldiers life. It prevents an overly sentimental
interpretation by focusing on the realistic
aspects of the soldiers clothing and
downplaying their sad expressions with shadows
from their caps.

  • Shiloh - Hebrew word meaning Place of Peace.
  • The battle of Shiloh (actual event) occurred on
    April 6, 1862 near a church called Shiloh.
  • Shiloh is surrounded by Peach Orchards (very
    peaceful), there were more than 3,000 deaths and
    20,000 causalities as a result of the battle.

  • This story is set in a Tennessee peach orchard on
    the night before the Civil War battle of Shiloh.
    A young drummer boy cant sleep because hes
    thinking about what will happen the next morning.
    He briefly considers staying behind when the
    fighting begins. Then a man walks by and stops to
    talk, and the boy discovers that this man is his
    general. From their discussion, the boy arrives
    at a new understanding about his role in the
    battle to come.
