Using Ipswitch WS_FTP
  • Downloading, Configuring, and Using Your
  • File Transfer Software

Ipswitch WS_FTP software can be used for
  • Publishing files to a website
  • Moving files too large to send in an email
  • Transferring files securely between servers
  • Uploading images to a website
  • Backing up files to a remote server.

Some things you must have
  • Access to the Internet
  • Web address for the remote server
  • A user name and password assigned to you by the
    remote server administrator.

Downloading the Software
  • Ipswitch WS_FTP can be downloaded at
    www.Ipswitch.com.
  • To the right of the file listing, click on Try
    for a 30 day fully functional trial version.
  • Download the trial version to your personal
    computer desktop.

Tutorial
  • There is a very helpful tutorial you can run that
    describes every step to setting up and using
    WS_FTP.
  • The following slides will highlight the major
    points of the tutorial.

Connection Wizard
  • The Connection Wizard starts up automatically the
    first time you open WS_FTP.
  • This is where you will need the Site Name of the
    FTP server you will be using, and the server
    address, user name, and password given to you by
    the server administrator.
  • When asked for FTP type, enter FTP unless the
    server administrator indicated otherwise.

What You See On-Screen
  • The screen is divided into a left side and a
    right side.
  • The left side shows the files and folders located
    on your personal computer.
  • The right side shows the files you have access to
    located on the FTP server.

Transferring Files
  • Locate the files on your computer you wish to
    transfer to the FTP server. Click on these
    files.
  • To copy these files to the FTP you can
  • Click on Edit, Copy, and click on the right side
    of the screen and click Paste or
  • Click on the arrow between the screens that is
    pointed to the right or
  • Drag and drop the files to the right side of the
    screen.

After Transferring Files
  • The Status bar below the divided screen will show
    when the files have been copied.
  • Clicking on and scrolling below the Status bar
    will show the sizes of the files transferred, and
    the speed of the transfer.
  • The right side of the screen will show what files
    have been transferred.

Disconnecting from the FTP Server
  • Once the files have been transferred, click on
    Disconnect on the upper tool bar.
  • Click on File, Exit to exit WS_FTP. Login
    information is saved and reconnecting is as easy
    as clicking on Connect in the upper tool bar.
  • If you do not disconnect from the FTP server, you
    will be automatically reconnected upon reentering
    WS_FTP.

Connection Wizard Site Manager
  • Site Manager allows you to establish connections
    with different remote servers.
  • Site Manager allows you to edit, rename, or
    delete existing sites.
  • Site Managers edit feature allows you to change
    passwords if you wish to do so.
