Title: SISO Software Products Study Group SISOSSPSG

1
SISO Software Products Study Group (SISO-SSP-SG)
  • Chair Bret Givens
  • for Emmet Beeker
  • Editor Thom McLean

2
Goals for this Study Group
  • Investigate, analyze, and discuss the definition
of a methodology for productizing software
  • Answer TOR Questions
  • Develop recommendations for resolution consistent
    with these TOR
  • Present a report of findings to the SISO CC and
    SAC

3
Key Points
  • Software development is a product development
    activity that SISO can support
  • SISO Policies and Procedures (PnP) must address
the formation and administration of Software
    Product Development Groups (SW-PDG)
  • SSP-SG Report tastes great or less filling...

4
Software development is a product development
activity that SISO can support
Per the general consensus of the active
participants in this study
  • SISO should not be in the software development
business, as such an activity would be
competitive with our members and contrary to
    principles governing non-profit, professional
    organizations
  • SISO should provide a supportive environment and
facilitate members in developing the products
they need, including endorsement of projects
    hosted outside of SISO
  • SISO should commission formulation of procedures
that address Software Product Development Groups
(SWPDGs), and should incorporate the procedures
    into the SISO PnP

5
PnP must address SW-PDGs
  • Potential SW-PDG Goals
  • Validation of a proposed standard
  • Comparison or benchmarking implementations of a
    standard
  • Research and Investigation
  • Promoting Commercial Acceptance of a Standard
  • SISO should ensure that any software developed by
its members in the context of an approved SWPDG
will be available, without restriction, to the
    community at large.
  • Specifically, SISO should develop one or more
software licenses, for use with software
developed by a SWPDG or distributed through SISO.
SISO legal counsel should review the license to
ensure protection of the rights of SISO and its
    members.

6
Report tastes great or less filling...
  • Came to workshop expecting to deliver to CC and
SAC...EXCOM added to next months agenda
  • In Short...
  • There does not appear to be any insurmountable
legal or organizational problem, and there
appears to be a very receptive development
    community
  • SISO cannot simply pick a standard way to develop
    software products
  • SISO must support the innovations of member
developers, but must evaluate the development
proposals in light of all possible effects on the
    simulation community
  • Realizations...
  • Just scratched the surface of sticky issues
  • More feedback must be solicited from
    international community, commercial and DoD
    sponsors
