Coal Bed Mapping Project
  • Mission Create a 124,000 GIS-based inventory
    of coal in West Virginia
  • First establish Stratigraphic framework for
defining the approximately 60 minable coal beds
  • For each coal bed map
  • Elevation in raster and vector format
  • Thickness in raster and polygon format
  • Mined-out area polygons
  • Extent polygon

3
Over 5,000 points were used to model the
Pittsburgh coal bed. WVGES has approximately
100,000 data points including drill holes, mine
map points and more.
4
Compiling Underground Mined Areas
  • Goal Create as complete and accurate
compilations of underground mined areas as
    possible
  • About 275 active mines annually
  • Estimated 100,000 abandoned mines
  • Recently expanded CBMP with MSHA funds to
    expedite georeferencing of mine maps

5
Maps are scanned, georeferenced, footprint is
digitized and polygon is attributed with
mine/company name and is indexed to the image file
6
CBMP Uses and Benefits
  • Tax Programs
  • Mine safety issues
  • Abandoned mined lands programs
  • Regulatory programs
  • Planning and development
  • Updated resource/reserve estimates
  • Economic forecasting

7
Progress to Date
- Mapping completed for 42 beds in 9.5 counties -
Currently proceeding across SW West Virginia
gt2500 mine polygons for 33 coal beds are
completed for the red counties
- 2100 mine polygons completed in green counties
8 coals are partially mapped in Kanawha and Boone
counties with rest to be completed next year for
these 2 counties
8
Accomplishments in Software Development
Significant progress migrating to ArcGIS from WS
ArcInfo
Close to completion of a new Database System
providing
  • robust, multi-user environment
  • integrated graphics and database forms
  • tighter GIS-Database integration
  • Tools
  • Oracle RDBMS Linux server
  • Java database forms and graphics
  • Spatial Database Engine (SDE) (Java interface)
  • ESRI MapObjects for Java
