Title: Porcine Parvovirus

1
Porcine Parvovirus
  • One of the most common causes of small litters of
pigs (three times more pigs are lost during
    pregnancy than after birth)
  • Costs the U.S. swine industry up to 75 million
    annually
  • Infected sows usually dont appear ill, but if
they are pregnant, the virus can be passed on to
the fetal pigs across the placenta

2
Porcine Parvovirus
  • If the infection occurs in the first month of
pregnancy, the fetal pigs will die and be
    absorbed
  • From day 30-70 of the pregnancy- fetal pigs die
    and are mummified
  • After 70 days, the growing pigs may be able to
    fight off the infection

3
Porcine Parvovirus
  • Very few swine herds in the U.S. are completely
    free of the virus
  • Up to 50 of all gilts may be susceptible to the
    disease
  • The only symptom that can be seen is that some
sows will not have pigs or will not breed back.
  • Abortions are rare because the endometrium is not
affected, so there is no PGF2alpha released.

Porcine Parvovirus
  • Infected pigs spread the virus by direct contact
with other pigs. They also shed the virus into
    the environment
  • The virus can survive well outside the animal
although it is sensitive to Clorox.
  • The only way to stop the virus is to properly
disinfect facilities with Clorox. Vaccines are
available for immunity that last throughout the
    life of the animal.
