  • Recognize the hard work, dedication, and talent
    of urban school educators and students
  • Educate the public about the accomplishments and
    potential of urban schools
  • Provide a concrete benchmark of excellence that
    motivates reform efforts and
  • Deepen the knowledge base of best practices for
    promoting urban school transformation.

  • Nominees from Chief State School Officers
  • Nominees from major urban superintendents
  • Urban National Blue Ribbon School Winners
  • Urban National Title I Distinguished Schools

All Finalists Met These Criteria
  • At least 50 of students met low-income criteria
  • No selective admissions criteria
  • Exceeded AYP criteria in 2003-04 and 2004-05
  • In 2004-05, met AYP criteria for school years
    2005-06 2006-07
  • At least 92 percent average daily attendance in
    both 2003-04 and 2004-05
  • A high cohort graduation rate for every major
    demographic group of students
  • A low suspension/expulsion rate
  • Other strong evidence of academic excellence
