Title: Scrambler Event

Scrambler Event
A Primer by Geneva Baker Casa Grande Middle School

What is it?
  • Scrambler is an event where teams design and
build a device that transports a Large Grade A
uncooked chicken egg a distance of 8 to 12 meters
along a straight track as fast as possible.
  • The device should stop as close to a terminal
barrier, going as straight as possible and not
hit the wall, without leaving a 2 meter wide
    lane.

Some Rules to Help You in Competition and
Building
  • The Scrambler must fit into a 0.75 meter cube.
  • You can not under any circumstances touch the
wall with any part of the Scrambler or any part
of your egg. This results in a run penalty.
  • The egg must be level with starting line at
    beginning of run.
  • The front 2 cm and rear 2cm must be visible.
  • No backstop for egg is needed but allowed if you
    wish.
  • There must be at least a 5x5x1.25 cm rigid,
unpadded surface parallel to the floor from 5-15
cm off the ground to hold the egg.
  • No electronics whatsoever!!
  • The egg transport cannot exit the 2 meter wide
lane at any time during the run.
  • Safety spectacles must be worn at all times
during event or you will be disqualified.
  • You must impound the Scrambler prior to
    competition.
  • If you have something revolutionary try to keep
it to yourself. If the competition gets hold of
    it you are sunk.

10
Competition Day
  • The Scramble System is impounded before the start
    of the event.
  • Once teams enter the area to compete they cannot
    leave or receive outside assistance.
  • At the event directors direction students will
bring their impounded scrambler to be weighed.
(If anyone has an electronic scale it would be
    greatly appreciated.)
  • Teams have 10 minutes to make two official runs.
  • All wheels of the egg transport must be on the
    floor at the start.

11
Scoring
  • Score is calculated by the following formula
  • Score 2 x (running time in seconds)(stopping
    distance in cm)
  • Lowest score wins.
  • The best running time of the two runs is used.
  • Generally the stopping distance is measured.

12
Scoring
  • Runs will get one run penalty for each of the
    following
  • Broken egg
  • Any part of the transport including the egg
    touches the barrier.
  • Any part of the transport goes outside of the
    lane during the run.
  • The device doesnt cover at least half the track.
  • One Construction Penalty will be assessed for
every rule under construction parameters that
    the transport has violated.

13
Rankings
  • 3rd Tier Runs with Construction Penalties
will be ranked by the following formula
  • Performance Value x ( of Construction Penalties
    of Run Penalties)
  • 1st Tier Runs with no Penalties will be
    ranked by their Performance Value
  • 2nd Tier Runs with Run Penalties, but no
    construction penalties.
  • Performance Value x ( of Run Penalties)

How will I set it up?
  • I am planning on setting it up so that is looks
    like this video
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vbaVGOL-EEgM

15
How will I set it up?
  • In a hallway or gym
  • 8-12 m long by 2m wide
  • Marked off with tape.
  • At the Starting Line, a .75cm cube
  • will be taped off.
  • I also need an area for impounding and
    measurement.
  • Spectators are welcome.
