- Studies the mechanisms of associative learning in
animals - how animals learn causal relationships
modify their behavior

- Studies the structure and function of proteins
how the molecular structure of enzymes enables
and modulates chemical reactions
3Faculty Athletics Representatives have both
off-campus and on-campus responsibilities
- The NCAA defines the FAR as a faculty or staff
member designated by the institutions CEO or
other appropriate entity to represent the
institution and its faculty in the institutions
relationships with the NCAA and its
conference(s). - On campus the FAR provides oversight and advice
in the administration of the institutions
athletic program to promote academic integrity
and institutional control of intercollegiate
athletics, and to enhance the student-athlete
experience. - KEY POINTS The FAR is responsible to the CEO
and the faculty, not the athletics department. - A primary concern is the academic welfare
- of the student-athlete.

5FAR Responsibilities Rules, Waivers, Appeals
Related to Eligibility, Competitions, etc.
- Involved in processes that change NCAA and Big10
rules with special concern for academic impact
and student-athlete welfare - recent example certification of eligibility
after academic terms - Involved in certification of eligibility and
reinstatement - Involved in the submission and review of
petitions for waivers - case-by-case relief from rules in special
circumstances - submission and review of appeals when petitions
are denied - Responsibility to review and comment on decisions
of others that have an academic impact or affect
student-athlete welfare - recent example format of mens golf championship
6FAR Responsibilities Compliance
- Know the rules and policies, especially those
that pertain to eligibility, recruiting, and
financial aid - Help monitor and assess athletics and
institutional efforts to insure compliance with
NCAA and Big10 rules and principles - Be aware of possible infractions and internal
inquiries - Be involved in reporting infractions to the Big10
and NCAA - Be involved in formulating responses to NCCA and
Big10 rulings
7FAR Responsibilities Student-Athlete Welfare
- FARs should be in contact with Student-Athlete
Advisory Committees they are available as an
independent source of advice and support for any
student-athlete - FARs should confirm that rules/policies
associated with athletics time commitments and
financial aid are honored - We are also concerned about the impact of
activities not covered by NCAA time restrictions
or other rules. - FARs should be aware of class scheduling and
other institutional problems that affect
student-athletes please tell us - FARs should encourage applications for
post-graduate scholarships and other awards

- Understand that our purpose is to monitor and
advocate for the academic and personal welfare of
student-athletes - Understand that we represent the interests of the
faculty and administration we are not in the
athletics department and do not report to the
director, staff, or coaches - If you or your team mates have concerns or ideas
about rules or policies that affect your ability
to achieve your academic or athletic goals,
please communicate with us - Encourage your team mates to participate in grade
checks, exit interviews, and other activities
that help the academic services staff support
your academic and athletic development
