Our Mission
  • To educate Summerour students about the severity
    of water issues that our area, and the
    surrounding areas face and to find ways to
    educate our community about these issues.

Implementation
  • The students spent a week in Guided Study
    learning about the water issues in our world.
  • The students wrote letters to community officials
    and our sister school about the issues we face
    and the possible solutions.

Lessons
  • Water Awareness Week March 11-14
  • Sixth Grade IB Community Service Project
  • Lessons are to be delivered during the guided
    study period on all sixth grade teams.
  • Awareness Tuesday and Wednesday
  • 1) KWL What do you know about the water
    shortage?
  • 2) Video Water video from United Streaming
  • Water Smart Water as a Natural Resource
  • 3) Graphing lake levels chart levels from the
    past. Students should use graph paper for this
    activity.
  • 4) Lastly, have a discussion comparing and
    contrasting lake levels last year and this year.

  • Implementation Thursday
  • What could we do to help with the drought?
  • Problem Solving Guide Students will come up
    with some possible solutions to the problem such
    as recycling water at car washes, low flow
    toilets, water saving devices in the school and
    community, etc.
  • Each teacher can focus on one item to implement
    putting a bucket in the bottom of your shower
    rain barrels, etc. Each teacher personalized
    this section to suit his or her interests.

  • Reflection Friday
  • Student wrote letters to the school board, city
    council members or the students of our new
    partner school in Ecuador.
  • Students can wrote letters in English or Spanish
    (if the letter was intended for students in the
    Ecuador school)
  • The purpose of the letter was
  • If the letter was to the school board, the
    purpose was to recommend practical solutions and
    things that they could implement in schools
    throughout the county.
  • If the letter was to the Ecuadorian students, the
    purpose was to tell them about our water problems
    (drought), tell them what we are doing about it
    (conservation) and to ask them what their water
    issues are. Do they have the same water
    problems? Different problems? We could also
    tell them about IB.
  • If the letter was to a Norcross city council
    member, the purpose of the letter was to give
    ideas on how council members could promote water
    conservation in Norcross.

  • As a community service project we built a rain
    catcher is our schools secret garden.

  • Algunas personas saben como conservar el agua
    pero otras no. Cuando conservamos el agua
    estamos ayudando al ambiente. Las personas que
    se preocupan en el gasto de agua ahorran agua
    cerrando el caño cuando se cepillan los dientes.
    Tambien ahorran agua cuando se bañan, se duchan
    en máximo cinco minutos.
  • El agua es el líquido más necesario de la
    tierra. Todos debemos preocuparnos mucho por
    conservarla, no unos cuantos. No podríamos vivir
    sin este líquido elemental. Si no tomamos agua
    nos podríamos morir de sed, por eso necesitamos
    conservarla.

Reflections
  • As a school, we decided that it is our job and
    the job of people our age to educate people on
    the water problems our area and the world around
    us face. We must start with us if we want to
    improve these problems and in the end, come up
    with a solution.
