JEFF-3.1 May 2005
5
Introduction
  • JEFF-3.1 released in May 2005.
  • Modified version JEFF-3.1.1 (2008) validated for
industrial use in and by France (changes in
    Np-237, Pu-239, 7 FPs a few minor changes).
  • Last versions adopted by European nuclear
    industry JEF-2.2 (1992) and JEFF-3.1.1 (2008)
  • Next release JEFF-3.2, expected in 2010
  • Reason to change first number an entirely
    different philosophy
  • Reason to change first decimal (usually) upgrade
    of the major actinides

6
Selection criteria for JEFF-3.2
  • For each nuclide, select the best evaluation in
the world, keeping in mind the most important
    application of that nuclide.
  • Best evaluation
  • Proven success in applications
  • Date of the evaluation
  • Quality of underlying physics (exp. and theor.)
  • Completeness (energy range, ang. dis., gammas,
    spectra, covariances, etc.)
  • Available sources
  • New evaluations, JEFF-3.1(.1), ENDF/B-VII,
    JENDL-3.3, EFF, BROND-2.2, CENDL-2.1, TENDL-2008

7
Selection criteria (cookbook)
  • Include new European evaluations produced since
    JEFF-3.1
  • Default upgrade take newer versions of
previously adopted libraries. If e.g. ENDF/B-VI.8
was taken for a JEFF-3.1 nuclide, take ENDF/B-VII
    now.
  • However, choose other evaluations if there are
reasons to do so (overrule the action mentioned
    above).
  • Adopt isotopes from other libraries if they do
not exist at all in JEFF. (7 from ENDFB/-VII)
  • Use TENDL-2008 (or TENDL-2009) for isotopes for
which no evaluation exists and to replace very
    old evaluations.

8
Specific new data files for JEFF-3.2
  • New U235,236,237,238, Pu-239,240 files underway
    (CEA)
  • New Am-241 evaluation from NUDATRA project (CEA)
  • Th-232, Pa-233 from IAEA project
  • Pb and Bi isotopes from NUDATRA project. (NRG)
  • Na-22,23, if ready on time (NRG)
  • EFF project All isotopes of Cr, Mn, Ta and W
    (FZK,IAEA)
  • Np-237 (CEA?)
  • Adopted from ENDF/B-VII
  • Sn-113, Xe-123, Ho-166m, U-239,240,241,
    Cf-253
  • TENDL-2008 evaluations for 72 nuclides When no
evaluations exists (all Ne, Tm, Yb isotopes),
long-lived nuclides or to replace old natural
evaluations (Zn, Os, Pt and Tl). Includes
    complete covariance information. (NRG)

9
Points of discussion/attention
  • Many evaluations in the range from As (Z33) to
Er (Z65) are very old and date back from JEF-2.2
or ENDF/B-V. Reason they are fission products
and some of them are known to perform well in
validation. However, for other use they are
unsuitable or at most of insufficient quality.
Can we adopt modern files for all of them and
    re-adjust the important FP data?
  • When updating actinide evaluations, make sure to
include 8 time groups for delayed neutrons.
  • Adopt ENDF/B-VII filename policy
n-058-Ce-142-jeff32.0 may be more attractive than
    JEFF31N5843_0.ASC
  • Make a script that creates JEFF-3.2 from other
sources and change the script when the JEFF
    community makes changes.
